Sibu food hawker prices

Although it has been drizzling the whole day, any fears there will be a flood has long evaporated. The drains are low and the chances are minimal.

Tonight is new year’s eve. When there is a kid involved it is difficult to arrange a sitter so we have to turn down any late night-functions.

Benghui suggested we go to Sugar Bun instead for he loves fried chicken. On arrival there we found no parking space because many people had gathered near the town square presumably to celebrate the countdown later.

So I drove around and we finally stopped at a coffee-shop near the outstation bus terminal. All buses leaving Sibu and coming from outside Sibu use this terminal. The name of the coffee shop is Yum-Yum Coffee Shop. Nothing grand, nothing fancy. Just a place where people eat and then leave :) The place was very clean when we were there. If the coffee-shop was air-conditioned, the prices would have been different.

We had the following for dinner. We shared it and felt very full. Perhaps it is because by nature we don’t eat much anyway. We also use minimal oil while cooking, so outside food which uses more oil makes us feel full very quickly.

Anyway this is what we had.

No floods in Sibu after all

There had been fears that it might flood this weekend. Some families did prepare to shift their cars to higher ground in the eventuality of a flood occurring. Also it had been raining on Friday and Saturday. The water levels in the drains did rise but not to alarming levels.

This pic shows that the inner city area did experience a little overflowing of the drains but overall, the feared floods did not occur. :)

Thank God!

I know this story sounds bizarre. But I beg you to keep an open mind.

Before that I had a recurring dream. It recurs every few months when I am sick or physically very tired or weak. I would see a couple having a drink under a wooden house on four pillars. The dream always got me nowhere. I could not make head or tail about it but I sensed it was an important dream. I could not interpret it.

Until one day I met a guy. This guy who for convenience sake I shall call So Lye. The minute I met him, I felt like I had known him forever. His face was unfamiliar and when I checked our backgrounds, I couldn’t have known him. I asked for his family name and it rang no bells. (more…)

” Sayang, tonight I no good eh? Sorry huh….i didn’t know. I bought it from Pudulah. It was not the real thinglah. I will go see the doctor tomorrowlah, sayang. Sorry sayang”

It was a simple modus operandi. Import sex paraphernalia and fake sexual enhancement pills: generic versions of certain drugs e.g. Viagra, Cialis, Livitra and Caverta 100, repackage them as well-known brands and sell them off at premium prices. Sex toys were also imported from China. (more…)

Ambitious, kiasu parents in Sibu

Benghui called me from home today. He was crying.Today is the day they register themselves for the new class. School actually starts on the 3rd of January.

According to his story, he arrived at the class early today. There was an empty seat so he took it. He chose the seat because it was near the front and he has an eyesight problem.

The teacher arrived and conducted her usual routine. An hour later, a lady rushed in and chased Benghui away. She told him, ” Today my son is sick, if not: he will be seating on this chair. You must not sit on this chair again. Look for another place.” She said she was at the class early so the seat was taken. Benghui was frightened of this ‘fierce auntie’ as he called her.

While I do understand every parent wants their best for their child, there is a limit. It shouldn’t be at the expense of others. It shouldn’t be through bullying, intimidating and of course it shouldn’t be through harassment of the other children.

I don’t blame the teacher as she was probably busy entertaining other parents, collecting fees or whatever needs to be done on the first day. I cannot stand this kiasu ( afraid to lose ) attitude. When I registered Benghui for a tuition class, the same set of parents would turn up at 0630 and place cushions, bags etc on a seat and claim it as theirs for the rest of the year. It isn’t wrong except that these kids are big and fat and hinder the vision of all those sitting at the back but no, the teacher told me that other parents had complained too but she dare not approach these same set of parents.

During the school term last year, these same set of parents and kids would arrive in school about 0630 and study together in class until the teacher arrives. They would linger around the classrooms, taking photographs of notes on the blackboard, assignments etc.etc. This drive to excel should be lauded but somehow ……….

Am I being naive? Not living in reality whilst these parents are doing their utmost for their kids? Am I doing enough for Benghui? Am I being a lousy parent? Aiya..parenting is not easy ….. I blame myself for letting Benghui go through that experience.

Sarawak folks worry about floods

Sarawak folks worry that what happened in Johor will repeat itself over here. They wonder too if the local authorities will be able to cope with an emergency crisis. On Wednesday a downpour flooded several parts of the city centre and the outskirts.

“Sarawak would end up facing similar problems like Johor if the weather worsens,” is a common grouse among local residents. His house was knee-deep in flood waters.

Miri is a lovely, well-planned city with few choosing the option to live in condominiums. Many live in single storey terraces, semi-detached or bungalows. With the advent of flood, many houses will be flooded, no matter the age of the structure or the type of house siding.

It was especially disappointing as it happened after the construction of the storm drain along Lereng Bukit. Millions of ringgit had already being spent on this project.

According to engineering sources, the most pressing component that had yet to be put into place was the culverts on the hillside from the old fire station up to Kampong Dayak.

In Sibu, local residents continue to worry as even a slight downpour can cause floods in certain older parts of town.

Meanwhile, in Yong Peng, a man made a decision that would haunt him for the rest of his life. S Kamalanathan decided to continue on his journey through a flooded stretch of road although advised not to do so. It costs him his wife and younger daughter. Police are still searching for his other child.

On the national scene, the country is gritting its teeth and hoping for the best as the Meteorological Department’s report on Wednesday forecast bad weather for Johor and south-eastern Pahang until Sunday, and continuous heavy rain for Malacca and Negri Sembilan for four more days which may result in further flooding.
