KUALA LUMPUR: Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil yesterday disagreed with a programme in Terengganu to give awards to men practising polygamy.

Shahrizat said the intention was open to misinterpretation although the intention was honorable.

“I don’t think there’s a need for it. I know that the programme is supposed to encourage men to help single mothers. But people may see it as an effort to promote polygamy.”

Shahrizat spoke to reporters after presenting Open Minds Yayasan Nur scholarship grants to 50 children with special needs yesterday.
