Degree alone not enough to ensure job, says Najib

KUALA LUMPUR: Najib said the Cabinet had directed the Public Services Department (PSD) to expedite the process of filling the 32,000 vacancies in the public sector. He also encouraged graduates to venture into the private sector or explore self-employment.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today reminded graduates that qualifications, the right skills and attitude are necessary to land a good job. The private sector is more competitive and graduates need to equip themselves not only with hard skills but also soft skills. Employees need to constantly improve themselves with new skills or face the risk of being left behind.

He was speaking at the International Islamic University Malaysia’s main campus in Gombak yesterday.

He told the graduates, “The country doesn’t owe you a job. This mindset has to change.”

32000 new jobs in the market will definitely bring new year cheer to the families of the graduates who now have have to worry about settling PTPTN loans and prop up ailing family finances.

What is of note is that he reminded the graduates not to wait for the government to give them jobs but instead to venture out, to excel and make themselves more marketable. Proficiency skills in English is one aspect the undergraduates will to look into.

At the same time, universities and colleges will have to constantly upgrade and review their curriculum to ensure they provide their undergraduates with marketable skills. Our neighbouring countries are ever so ready to welcome new investments and their work force is willing to start at a lower pay rate.
