Vietnamese girls sold as wives in Malaysia

Wives bought and sold after ‘bridal’ girls parades in small-town-coffeeshops.

Madam Cupid has upgraded herself in Malaysia. Now, seeking a Vietnamese bride can be done without hassle. These potential wives are paraded in coffeeshops and the potential buyers get to have a first-hand-look at the girls. Because of poverty and problems back home, these women are resorting to becoming wives to complete strangers.

The price depends upon the aesthetic beauty of the girls concerned. These girls, from poor families in Vietnam come to Malaysia of their own freewill in pursuit of a better life. To be match-made with a mate and being offered a choice is acceptable to me but these girls are paraded in coffee-shops and agents’ houses as cattle and sold off to the men who are willing to come up with the cash ranging from RM20000 to RM30000 and the deal is sealed there and then.

To me this is appalling. I have been brought up to respect the womenfolk as full-fledged citizens of the world and not as cattle. I agree wth MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau head Datuk Michael Chong who said such a practice is “sickening and immoral”.

The girls are paid for on the spot and taken away by the men as their wives. Such a practice is no different from the sex slave trade. There have been genuine cases but there have been untoward incidents where the girls were only after money or were tortured by their husbands.

Executive director of Women’s Aid Organisation (WAO) Ivy Josiah said a sale was no basis for marriage or mutual respect, let alone love.

Now let us imagine if I went to the USA and made to parade in fast food restaurants to be sold off as a husband…..i guess i would have to start throwing wads and wads of cash around , followed by real estate and I would have to plead and beg to be bought. Jokes aside, I wouldn’t like to be paraded and inspected in that manner. It is demeaning. Legally, there has been no infraction of the law but obviously something needs to be done about this practice.
