Curse of the Golden Flower and a little too much flesh exposed for Gong Li and Li Man
Curse of the Golden Flower, a multi-million dollar historical epic movie has been raising eye-brows everywhere it has been screened. Critics have panned it as a Chinese movie made for western audiences and as a movie which will give a false image to the western world of the Chinese culture.
There is a fair amount of bare flesh on display in the movie. The 45m (£23m) epic deals with court intrigue in the Tang dynasty and had the best opening weekend of any Chinese movie.
The Xinhua news agency said: “The most eye-popping role is played by Gong Li, the empress, whose breasts are so tightly wrapped that they appear ready to pop out of her costume.”
Actress Gong Li defended the costumes used and said, “They show the beauty of a woman’s curves. There was no feeling of awkwardness or danger for us wearing the costumes and they are based on period costumes.”
Yours truly here hasn’t seen the movie yet but once it reaches our shores, I won’t be surprised the pirated VCD sellers will find their business brisk again. For the record, despite the protestations of Gong Li, my personal opinion is a movie like this would be able to sell itself and costumes like these are not necessary. However that is just yours truly’s humble opinion.

i’ve watched the movie.. it was great. Grand and huge production. A must watch.
Despite the costumes (which were very much in discussion) pay more attention on how all the scenes are arranged. The director is great.
Very nice and neat arrangement on how everyone is appear in the scene.. who comes in first, what to show first… everything is so neat!
