George Michael appreciates nurses and calls them heroes

George Michael sings for the nurses

George Michael is a resilient performer and has legions of fan the whole world. He has endured being in the public eye for 25 years. Even the scandals involving him that rocked the world did not diminish his popularity.

Are you a nurse? George loves nurses so much that he gave them a free concert.

Kudos to George Michael for this act of love. Even if it is a publicity stunt, if it is ..I am not saying it is: it is still a marvelous gesture and has repercussions upon the whole nursing world i.e. the image of nurses.

The fact that singer George Michael’s chose to end his greatest hits tour with a special free concert for NHS nurses in north London has uplifted the morale of nurses in the whole world.

He sang hits that spanned his 25 year career in the music industry. He told the small audience of nurses that the concert was in appreciation of the care nurses had bestowed upon his sick mother. He described them as heroes and an under-appreciated group.

It is true in big towns and cities, nurses are an under-appreciated group. Unlike doctors, there is no glamour in their profession. Some people even avoid them in times of crisis e.g. during the bird flu epidemic for fear the nurses being in contact with sick patients might infect them in turn.

However with the advent of private hospitals, nurses in Malaysia are now better off than before. They have a choice of employers unlike in the past where all nurses worked for the government.

Next time you go to a hospital or a clinic, remember they don’t owe you anything. It is not their fault that you are sick. They are just following orders.

Dressing wounds, emptying bed-pans are a chore, no matter how you look at it. Neurotic, psychotic, grumpy and difficult patients exist in the hospital ward. Under the best of circumstances no one is perfect. But a sick patient tends to get bored, worried, impatient and suffers from irrational fears.

The nurses as a whole in Malaysia have done a marvelous job, nursing and caring for the patients under their care. They work under a lot of stress and tension.

So, when will we have Awie or any popular singer who is simply adored by the nurses staging a free concert for our local nurses? :)

Believe me, they deserve to be appreciated. I salute you, nurses.
