Exercise rather than diet to lose weight to prevent bone density loss
Are you overweight? Are you dieting?

I just found out that when overweight people lose weight, they often lose bone mineral density as well, increasing their risk for osteoporosis. However new research suggests to preserve bone strength, exercise rather than calorie restriction is a better option.

The results appear in the Dec. 11 issue of The Archives of Internal Medicine. The researchers acknowledge that their sample was not large and did not examine sex differences in bone mineral density responses.
Dr. Dennis T. Villareal, the lead author of the study and an associate professor of medicine at Washington University in St. Louis, recommends diet and exercise together in a weight-loss program. “That way, you get the weight loss benefits of the diet,†he said, “but prevent the negative effect on bone health.â€

Diet AND exercise, both. Cos exercise alone is still not likely to burn all the extra calories if you don’t watch the calorie intake.
Ok.thanks. But for me I lost from 170lbs to 132lb from exercise alone..and then I decided to go up to 150lb which I am today. Mainly through exercise coz i didn’t diet at all
But in my case, I exercised almost every day..aerobics, weight lifting and sauna. I went swimming too.
My case may be a bit extreme coz I had just come back from seeing a cardiac specialist so I was very motivated
i have to agree with bengbeng. from my own experiences I know that exercise alone, and I am not talking of gym exercise, but simple ones like walking, especially up and down hills, swimming, cycling a bicycle, are sufficient to lose weight and not only that maintain it easily and also attain a nice physique, without needing to diet. Eat in moderation, but no need to deprive urself of anything to eat.
I think this idea used to be common in the olden days, exercise as a way of losing and maintaining weight. before the dietitians and nutrition experts came along and advocate just dieting as a way to lose weight. I think the weight loss that comes naturally from an active life, is much more longlasting and beneficial and can be maintained easily, so that there is no yo yoing of weight. I think, as a way of losing weight, dieting is harmful.
Losing weight thru diet alone is really not a very wise thing unfortunately many women do it. I remember once when I was at a hair salon, the hairdresser asked one of her clients “Did you eat the diet pills that I recommended? Good hor, make you lausai like nobody’s business, I lost like X number of lbs ady loh”. My female relatives also limit their diet to almost “rabbit-like” quantities to lose weight. As you said this is very harmful what they dun realize is also loss of muscle mass.
I wrote with conviction coz i have a fren, a lady who lost lots of weight..she was determined n motivated n somehow it then went all wrong. She has now turned to regular exercises and doesn’t really diet now. But for her case, however, her weight yo yoes. dependent on how often she goes to the gym in a month.
