16 year old Bintulu boy murdered in school by his school mates
16 year old Matius Mering August, 16 of SMK teknik found death instead of education at SMK Teknik, Bintulu. He was beaten up by schoolmates inside the school compound slightly past 5 pm on Saturday.
It is reported that he was transferred to the school about a week ago. He was also a boarder.
Reliable sources but nevertheless still unconfirmed Sibu coffee shop sources say that the family moved to Bintulu some time ago after his father died in a tragic accident in Sibu. The widowed mother brought all the kids back to Bintulu and sold vegetables. There is a toddler, a primary school kid, a fifteen year old and of course Matius.
According to sources, Matius was just back from town when a group of more than 10 senior students bashed him up.
As he was still new to the school, I speculate that he was being bullied in some form or other. After all, how much harm can a new kid create in school in a week? At the most, he was probably adjusting to a new life in a new school.
The school principal was asked about it, but declined to make any comments.
SMK Teknik is a huge school and is an impressive school. It is well run and the boss is high up in the education hierarchy in Bintulu. There is a big student population and everything looks ship-shape.The government has spent millions on this school and its students.
All the input has been put in. So, what went wrong? Who do we blame? The principal, wardens, teachers, students, society or the parents?
Is this gangsterism in its ugliest form? How can we ensure it doesn’t happen again?
The last word must be from Bintulu Member of Parliment Dato Seri Tiong King Sing who urged SMK Teknik not to feel threatened by the incident, but to assist the police by providing full details on the incident.

The public’s trust in the education system must not be compromised. These students who took a life must be made to pay for their mistakes. A friend told me that they are so young and probably didn’t intend Matius to die but that is no excuse. A life has been taken. We must send a clear message to all in this country that lives must not be trifled with.
The 18 sets of parents and their immediate families in Bintulu will probably be asking for their son’s immediate release etc etc in the days to come but let us not forget the crime they are being investigated for is serious.

This is tragic. I speculate that perhaps the seniors had some pent up ill-feelings which was released on the poor boy.
I was talking to his grieving relative this morning…
wuah! so mean ah those kids!

This is so heinous! I can’t believe schoolkids capable of murder!!! Oh this is very sad. So Sad. He’s just a kid! They are all just kids! Where are the ADULTS??????
The adults can’t be everywhere. The NST says that it could be a form of ragging done without authorization
There’s a rumour said during the orientation week, the gang asked him to buy them cigarettes but he refused…
It’s just a rumour I heard recently from my uncle.
The root problem is the need to demonstrate their authority and power over another person. That in turn is caused by an inferiority complex… a challenge to the authority sparks off violent reactions.
This which u speak of affects even adults in junior authoritative positions
