Please be careful on the road. Do not be just another statistic on road safety campaigns.

It is the time of the year when reunion dinners have been eaten, friends and relatives met, hugged and for some said goodbyes to. Now is the time when many families are thinking of the journey home.

I remember a time when I had to drive down to KLIA to pick up a guest. There was no connecting flight from KL as all flights were full due to the cny season. Upon reaching Behrang…i can’t remember if this was the location .., there was a heavy storm and my wipers couldn’t cope with the heavy onslaught of rain. I decided to stop at the nearest highway stop and rest. In the process, I saw many vehicles I have previously overtaken , overtake me.

My passenger was agitated. “Why waste time?”, she asked, grumbled, moaned and whined. ” I travelled so far in a few hours and now so much time for such a short distance…moan…moan… grumble.. grumble..sigh..sigh.”

Half an hour later, the furious storm was over. I continued my journey to see the same vehicles in a multi vehicle pile-up. I don’t know what happened but the policeman motioned us to move along. I remember a man holding up a child in a horizonal position crying, and to my creative imagination….cursing God?

Come to think of it….that incident did not stop my passenger from moaning about the loss of time. I was so relieved to reach my destination safely whereas she took me for granted except for Ipoh where I entered Ipoh for a meal..tauge koay teow soup and chicken and eventually went round and round Ipoh looking for the exit out of Ipoh. I was hopelessly lost.

Possibly millions of people will be on the roads this coming week as they head home to their normal lives. The police has announced the number of deaths due to road accidents over the Chinese New Year period has reached 101.

“So we ( the police ) hope that we will be able to have a successful operation this time and I call upon all the motorists to help abide by all the traffic rules as we have another seven more days to go before the operation is concluded,” Datuk Nooryah said

Please be careful on the streets…remember your loved ones, yourself and let us not forget that life is a very precious gift that has been given to us and we have nurtured it until we are what we are today. Take good care of it. Be a good and responsible father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister and citizen.
