Preparing prawn cracker the healthy way

I had some bloggers with me this morning so I decided to prepare some prawn crackers or keropok. I was amazed they found my cooking style so different. Apparently in KL, they fried it in lots of hot oil in a wok until it expands. They were astounded when I did it my way. I didn’t need to dry it under the sun for a few days as they say they did.

This is a packet of prawn-crackers.

I have always cooked my prawn-crackers without a single drop of oil. Of course, it doesn’t expand as much as if cooked in oil but it is oil free and the taste is more crunchy and just as delicious. More important, I don’t accumulate calories or eat excess oil.

I instead put it in a micro-wave oven and express heat it. My micro-wave express heats for 2 minutes and then it stops. I repeat this 2 more times or in other words it is in the micro-wave for a total of six minutes. This is what the cooked prawn-cracker looks like. It will be even better if I had put less in the container but I was in a rush.

I then serve it with acar or preserved or pickled vegetables. Voila prawn-cracker with acar ala Bengbeng. Best of all it is oil-free. The bloggers insisted it tasted great. It was finished in 5 minutes. Would have been faster if not for the fact they had to spend time scooping the acar into the prawn cracker and then eating it. The acar is very spicy but one of the bloggers asked for chilly padi.

your keropok is rather small… my house is yummy and big… but no acar. :(

The positive side is there is no oil involved but the negative side is it doesn’t grow very big..furthermore, this is the small type from Mukah..however without oil we can’t expect it to expand too much :)

sounds like a healthy way to enjoy keropok. if i want to spice it up, i usually dip into chilli sauce.
