Romance and courtship via internet chatrooms

ininternet romance

It was not the conventional way of meeting but the end result was the same. They fell in love and will get married on the 1st of July.

So, how did they meet? They met through the internet and chatted with each other as strangers. Nowadays there are the MIRC, Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ ..just to name but a few. Slowly as they got to know each other, the guy, businessman Lee Kok Kuan, finally found the ‘oomph’ to ask the lady, Ng Sin Yee out on a date. Their first meeting must have been like a blind date. Where shall we meet, how will you be dressed, will he or she like me in person, what if he or she is disappointed in me…. all these thoughts must have flashed through their minds.

They were lucky. Fate was on their side and love blossomed. However I must caution readers to take precautions when meeting a date for the first time. It is easy to be mislead on the internet. He or she may spin a yarn so thick that he or she may have forgotten which is truth, exaggeration or simply an outright lie.

I suggest that meetings be held at public, crowded places. Let someone know where you will be and who you will be meeting. Now that phone lines have to be registered, let someone know the number your date can be reached.

Never ever give private, personal information through the internet. You never know if the date is a weirdo or a psycho. Ladies especially, take all necessary precautions. Never get into an enclosed space like a hotel room, car etc. etc unless you are absolutely sure of that person.

Meet for a few times to know the person better before giving all your amour to that person or declaring your undying love. Your date may have ulterior motives and preying on lonely singles.

As an added precaution, insist in a gentle manner on exchanging pics before agreeing to a date. Love despite what everyone says is not blind. As much as possible get to know the date’s background. There are ways to read between the lines in internet chats. Unlike ordinary everyday conversation, online chats can be saved so ask the same questions some time later to know if the other party is speaking the truth.

I attended a wedding last month of a couple from Sibu who met through the internet. She was in Australia and he is a doctor in Singapore. Through their chats they found that they knew each other before in real life. They had many interests in common. He showed his valor by flying over to see her unannounced but it turned out well.

So, go online chatting and wish you all the best. But, keep what I wrote in mind. Never throw caution to the wind. It is always better to be safe than sorry.
