Unemployment stress leads to suicide for 43-year-old Chinese bachelor in Mukah
Tuesday afternoon was another warm languid afternoon for Kampung Penakub Ulu,Mukah, two and a half hours away from Sibu.
A bachelor was seen rowing a boat to the middle of the river. He tied a bag of stones to his body and jumped in. A Villager saw him then raise one hand above the river and rowed over to help him. By the time they reached the spot, he was nowhere to be found.
The 43-year-old bachelor was unemployed. He was a quiet person and kept very much to himself.
“Did he change his mind?”, this thought might be haunting his survivors. But it cannot be denied that being unemployed is very stressful especially when one is no longer in the twenties when life seems so full of promise.
Sadly Kueh Thian Fong is no longer with us to tell us why he did what he did. But it takes no genius to speculate that he must have been suffering from emotional stress
“The world is but a stage and we are but actors on it”, said Shakespeare centuries ago but it is still true in this present day and age. Play your part. Reach out to others.
Live more meaningful lives. Sometimes a willing ear,a kindly gesture, some small talk or a little bit of attention will make a world of difference to the recipient. Let us not lead inward looking lives but let us try to make a difference to those who live with us and around us.
