Rage of a woman spurned and pricey divorce

A 45-year-old man who rejected a woman’s proposal of marriage has reported to the police of death threats made to him. Prior to this he had found out that his girl friend who worked in an entertainment outlet had threatened to get people to do the job for her.

In yet another case, a man has reported to the police he was threatened by his brother-in-law and asked to pay RM5000 monthly alimony charges as well as compensation amounting to RM300 000. The marriage had apparently broken down and they were living separate lives. What precipitated this whole incident was his decision to file for divorce.

Pricey divorce in the offing

Human beings have feelings and the term love is often used loosely. It is used by long-term-married couples, one married-one-single couples, double-single couples and in illegal liaisons under paid arrangements. In the throes of love -making, promises are made which in the bright light of sunshine does not always seem like the brightest of ideas.

The first case above is easier to settle and a settlement can be made. It is basically a misunderstanding. The second case is more complex. It is a lose-lose situation as in contrast to a win-win situation. It is a what-happens-when-a- relationship-turns-bad scenario.

It is impossible to turn back the clock. Unfortunately in Malaysian society, it is always the female party who faces the most trauma and consequences. I was asked for counsel for of such a situation in the past and the female took my advice and is now building a new life. Her ex-husband too has moved on. If today, I am asked to give counsel, I wouldn’t. I was too naïve and gave her advice when there were no fixed guarantees everything would turn out alright. It is fortunate she is now happily married.

Folks, sometimes it is easier said than done but we have to learn to let go, be it a much loved car, precious relationship or a lifestyle we are used to. If we can’t, it will be like a stone around our neck forever.

This is just my humble two-cents worth of kopi-tiam talk. You have to make your own decisions and face the consequences………
