Sarawak DAP will not work with PAS but will coordinate with other parties.

Just when I thought everything was quiet on the political front here in Sarawak I heard from friends that Richard Wong Ho Leng of the DAP in a press conference had said that the state DAP would field 10 candidates in the coming general parliamentary election.

Ho Leng expects it to be held at any time from the end of the year end. In tandem with political reality and the changing times, the state DAP would also include women in the line-up. He also said three candidates would be contesting in Chinese-minority constituencies which has lead to speculation among my friends which are the three constituencies . This is an unexpected development.

“We are all set for the coming parliamentary election and we have no problem in the selection of candidates,” Ho Leng said, but declined to reveal the identities of the candidates.

Ho Leng said the DAP definitely will not cooperate with PAS but would coordinate with other relevant parties to avoid three-cornered fights.

The state DAP is trying its best to wrest more seats in this coming parliamentary elections. At the moment everything is uncharted territory. They never expected to win so handsomely in the recent elections. In the previous election, there was a joke circulating around that if anybody were to be nominated, the Mr Anybody would win. The anti-establishment sentiment was so strong in a few urban-based constituencies. I speculate it was also partly due to the weaknesses of the coalition front to disseminate information to the voters effectively.

In this coming elections, it is still too early to gauge public sentiment. The ruling coalition should work on their weaknesses, PR and information-disseminating channels and show a united front. In the meantime, the opposition is beginning to see a light at the end of the channel.
