It is with deep sadness I learned of a family of five who perished in a fire at Kampung Chempaka last week. The half brother is quoted to have said he hopes God will punish those responsible for the incident.

I can empathize with him as these raw words indicate how hopeless he feels in the onslaught of this great tragedy that has befallen his family.

According to him, it is unlikely alongs were involved as his half-brother was not a gambler, he didn’t borrow money and he didn’t have enemies. But a burned towel soaked in kerosene was found at the scene of the arson. There are no clear figures to point fingers at.

He disagreed that family squabbles could have led to the burning of the house with all family members inside. It is fortunate that Leong’s other half-brother, Chow Wah, 50, his wife, their three children and a six-year-old granddaughter who occupied three rooms upstairs, escaped unhurt.

Personally I don’t think it is a family feud. Families quarrel and come back together. Human beings value life and in the heat of the moment passion rise and murders do occur but this senseless murder breaks all sense of human decency and human values as we know it in Malaysia.

I hope that some witness comes forward with information and that the police will solve this case. Police investigations are going on and they are still looking for clues.

It is appalling that this arsonist who came on a motor-cycle in the middle of the night is somewhere out there free while a whole family perished. The chances are that he/she may never be caught.
