Death-row Kenneth Lee pays out RM550 000 to the family of his victim
It was revealed in the NST Kenneth Lee Fook Mun, grandson of former finance minister Tun H.S. Lee, has reached an out-of-court settlement with the family of Lee Good Yew. He will pay them a sum of RM 550 000
Good Yew’s husband, Peter Chan Kok Heng, and her brother, Lee Guat Chee, filed a civil suit against Kenneth following a shooting that resulted in her death.
Kenneth’s counsel, Rabinder Singh told reporters that his client’s action in settling the case showed that he was remorseful and just wanted to move on. He is on death row in Sungai Buloh prison. He is hopeful of a pardon from the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Bengbeng:
Kenneth Lee is quoted to have said he wants to move on. He murdered Good Yew. It has been 7 years since then. He is still languishing in jail on death row. I believe he has had enough time to think over what has happened and what he has done. It reaffirms my faith in Malaysian justice. All are equal in the eyes of the law.
Mrs Bengbeng:
Time will help to heal all wounds. All feelings of anger and animosity should be set aside. It is perhaps time to move on. Nothing can alter the fact that Good Yew is no longer with us and nobody can undo that. But although the monetary compensation may be viewed as blood money by some, it will come in handy to the family. There is no need for dramatics. Rightly the family has decided to accept the settlement and move on with their lives.
Kenneth Lee has only himself to blame for this predicament. He brought all this to himself. It matters nought to me what happens to him as he is of no consequence to me. But to give him a pardon is unacceptable. He must be made to pay for his mistakes. I can accept if he is removed from death row and his sentence is changed to a life sentence but definitely not a total pardon. Come on, he killed a woman without provocation. He shot her point-blank range while she was sitting in her car. In what way was she a threat to him?.
