Good bye Datuk Seri Dr. Lim Keng Yaik

farewell
The Star

Not many may have been aware but yesterday was a historical day in Malaysian politics. The grand old man of Malaysian politics has stepped down. Always blunt, gruff and straight to the point, he was a newsman’s darling.

His one-liners were legendary and he was generally considered a good man and a political asset by his party and constituents. This giant in Malaysian politics has outlived and outmaneuvered many lesser politicians and pulled his party through many crisis. Thus a 26-year old era has ended. However he will be available to the party as national adviser.

It was also a smooth handover as he passed his baton to Tan Sri Dr. Koh Tsu Koon the acting party president.

Ever the joker, he pulled one on the audience when at a critical moment on the podium he asked them during his farewell address at the extraordinary national delegates conference, “Even before I step down (as president), you are saying this and that in the resolution. What if I don’t want to retire?”

It was also an emotional moment for Datuk Seri to hand over the reins to a party which he had nurtured and dedicated so many years of his life to. Those present could feel the atmosphere too. He was seen wiping his eyes. Dr Lim, however will continue as Energy, Water and Communications Minister.

“I may be strong but I am still human and I have feelings,” he said of the emotional moment.

To me this smooth handover of power is a rare thing. Little strain on the party grassroots or leadership. A smooth transition. No holding on to power at all costs. Datuk Seri, syabas! After his retirement as president, Dr Lim said he would volunteer his service to the party

he is a funny man. remember going to his house (my friend was going to marry his daughter)… when he talked… his saliva was all over the place.

i hope the one taking over the throne will be a strong person.

BB: he is an original masterpiece - the conservative chinaman who handles his responsibilities just like a china man business-effective too :)
