Photohunters theme: Steps

stairway
For this week’s theme I have chosen, this steps from an Iban longhouse. It is a plank with steps nailed in. Notice the chicken underneath the steps. It came because it saw me and was probably hoping for food. Notice also the water container. It is for washing the feet before ascending the steps.

The Iban longhouse where the photo was taken.

simple Christmas worship
I was there for Christmas. It is a simple Christmas worship service but the Spirit of God is very much alive there.

I took the liberty of adding in a photo of some of the smiling children at the longhouse. They made us feel very welcome.

I’m so glad you included the photo of the children! So sweet. Those steps look like they would be very hard to climb down!

  4. Lisa Renee on 21 April, 2007

That is an amazing group of photos, thank you for sharing them. Especially the last one, I’d have to say that is my favorite.

    :-)

thats a very modern longhouse, nowadays still can find really traditional ones?

BB: New ones are concrete and look like terrace houses in Sibu now :) a sign of the improving economy compared to the past

  6. Linda on 21 April, 2007

I don’t think that I would do very well with those steps being the uncoordinated klutz that I am! I bet those happy children have no problems scrambling up and down, though!

  7. jmb on 21 April, 2007

Those are very narrow steps and where’s the bannister. I’d be killing the chicken as I fell off.

Steps to enjoy J.CO Donuts. It’s the best donuts here, MUCH better than Dunkin’ Donuts and Krispy Kreme. I don’t own any of their outlet, neither my friends and relatives, so just trust me My favorite are Cheese Me U…

Some might find it scary to step on such staircase, especially those who wear high heels ;)

oh yeah.. I have taken shots of the longhouse staircase in Kampung Benuk in the past..

  13. Gattina on 21 April, 2007

That’s a nice variation from all the steps for humans I have seen this morning ! Very good idea ! and I also love the picture of these joyful children !

  14. YTSL on 21 April, 2007

That’s a much more modern and cleaner looking long house than the ones I visited on my thus far only visit to Sarawak…with only the steps looking rather make-shift!

  15. Dragonheart on 21 April, 2007

Lovely photos! Cool shot for the photo of the steps.

  16. superkimbo on 21 April, 2007

I wish we had made it to a longhouse while we were in Sarawak. We stayed in Kuching for only 3 days and just ran out of time… Next time!

    Hi bengbeng.
When I was younger (about 8) and lived in a kampung, I used to walk on this type of wooden steps to our chicken house. It was wobbly and narrow, but it was fun. :P

I like the first picture. It’s steep though and too narrow. But we have the same kind in the Philippines used for boarding small boats.

What a beautiful and moving post. Thank you so much for the photos and commentary. (You can ask our advice for underwear any time: thanks, also, for those pics! ;-)

  41. Bernard on 22 April, 2007

Those steps are definitely not for the timid of heart! Haha…

    Lovely kids!

Wuching, the traditional ones STILL DO exist.. the further they are from the cities, the more traditional they are (and frugal).
