Remembering Leslie Cheung and depression
I don’t know how I suddenly remember Leslie Cheung this morning. Maybe it is triggered by stats which revealed someone was accessing my website to search for Leslie Cheung. I practically grew up watching him in the movies. I saw him more often than I saw my real relatives whom I met only at weddings.
When he died his sudden death, it left an ache in the hearts of fans all over the world. He was not just Leslie, he was a part of their childhood, a part of their lives. The mothers looked upon him as a son, the girls and some men thought of him as their virtual lover although the term had not been coined yet.
Leslie Cheung Kwok-Wing (September 12, 1956 – April 1, 2003) (Traditional Chinese: 張國榮; Simplified Chinese: å¼ å›½è£; Cantonese IPA: [tsœŋ55 kwÉ”k33 wɪŋ11], Jyutping: zoeng1 gwok3 wing4; Mandarin Pinyin: ZhÄng Guóróng, Wade-Giles: Chang Kuo-jung; nickname “Gor-gor” (哥哥, “Elder Brother” in Cantonese), was an actor and a musician from Hong Kong. From his fame to his death, he is cited as one of the most influential Cantopop singers of all time. He was a hakka
Cheung’s suicide note (translation): “Depression! Many thanks to all my friends. Many thanks to Professor Felice Lieh-Mak (Cheung’s last psychiatrist, 麥列è²è²). This year has been so tough. I can’t stand it anymore. Many thanks to Mr. Tong. Many thanks to my family. Many thanks to Fei-Fei (Lydia Shum Din-ha). In my life I did nothing bad. Why does it have to be like this?” Cheung’s suicide note (Chinese): “Depression! 多è¬å„使œ‹å‹ï¼Œå¤šè¬éº¥åˆ—è²è²æ•™æŽˆï¼Œé€™ä¸€å¹´å¾ˆè¾›è‹¦ï¼Œä¸èƒ½å†å¿å—, 多è¬å”先生,多è¬å®¶äººï¼Œå¤šè¬è‚¥å§. 我一生沒åšå£žäº‹ 為何這樣?”
I speculate his depression had gone into the area of psychiatry…when there are events that are so stressful… people can go into depression. Depression is pathological. He was seeing a psychiatrist. People with depressive illness can commit suicide. They just don’t feel it’s worth living anymore. They don’t enjoy the things they used to enjoy. Their mood is low all the time and could cry at the most minor provocation. Usually they write longer suicide notes. Perhaps, it has been truncated for the public
Goodbye, Leslie. Goodbye

Good that you highlighted this. Depression is very treatable.

I miss Leslie too. Love his songs and count myself fortunate to have attended one of his concerts but it’s through his movies that I got to know him best. HE’S A WOMAN, SHE’S A MAN is in my top ten movies of all time lost. He was simply superb in that.
