The police left and they all came

Selama Itam could only watch in horror and in total helplessness when scores of looters looted a longboat under cover of darkness. Her dead husband was still trapped inside and the callous people who came in longboats, cars and four wheel drives trampled all over the long boat and presumably her dead husband.

Of square pegs and round holes

I remember once when I received my first pay cheque, I went to buy a shirt from Gama Supermarket . I felt loaded. I was working as a parking attendant then while waiting for my SPM results. When I wore it, I looked at myself in the mirror, the colour made me look like the colour of a cockroach. In the same way, a long sleeved shirt in a light blue shade looked real cool on me. Never mind that my pockets were empty after buying the 2 shirts. :) I rode to Fettes Park and then went to the Pesta Pulau Pinang site that night dressed in the blue shirt with a date and felt so ‘cooooool’.

Google Adsense and Mylongkang

Hahaha….you may be wondering why I am laughing. Finally Mylongkang has reached the USD100.00 level. it has been a long haul. Initially it seemed like the figures never changed. I started Google Adsense about the time wuching arrived in Sibu.

I put ads at the top and at the side. At first, I was worried readers would find my blog too commercial. Surprisingly the page views didn’t suffer from it. A reader actually got me started on the idea. The anonymous reader wrote on 26 Dec 2006 at 9:05 am -

Single mother and teenage son woes

motorcycle

40 year old woman, still attractive but very tired and very worried.

Sophia: I didn’t serve him dinner last night. I let him starve. He is 16 years old, my eldest he is and should have known better. Why does he always rebel against me? I have tried my best, God knows! It is not easy to be a single mother with three sons. All he had to do was to go to school. I don’t expect him to be ‘pandai pandai’ ( very clever ). All he has to do is pass his SPM and go to technical school and become a mechanic. I have starved, scrimped and sacrificed everything for them :(

Public apathy or tidakapathy for homeless children in prosperous Miri

tidakapathy

It was a comedy of errors but not funny at all. Senadin assemblyman Lee Kim Shin received a call from a woman who was shocked to see children legs among some cupboard boxes strewn like rubbish. He rushed to the scene expecting the worst and it was indeed true. He called the police and also called for an ambulance.

Upon closer inspection, the children were not hurt, just deep asleep and an almost empty tin of glue was found nearby. The commotion made by the crowd and the cold woke the children up. Apparently they survive by begging for food and money. Many had closed their eyes to their plight as they had gotten used to them.

When I think of these two children aged aprroximately between seven and ten, I wonder how could fate have been so cruel to them especially in a city like Miri. Miri is a very prosperous city. But perhaps fate is on their side. Now that their case has been publicised , perhaps better times are ahead. At least they will receive a roof over their heads and regular meals.

Perhaps God had his eyes over them and couldn’t stomach their plight any more.

Spider bite possible cure for erectile dysfunction

spider
Finally, what has been discussed behind closed doors is again discussed openly. The discovery came quite accidentally. Men who had been bitten by the Phoneutria nigriventer or Brazilian Wandering Spider experienced priapism - long and painful erections. It refused to go down.

This prompted the idea by Brazilian and US scientists into looking into using spider venom as a possible treatment for male impotence. From their investigations, they found that the venom contains a toxin, called Tx2-6, that causes erections. However don’t go looking for Phoneutria nigriventer. Its bite can kill sometimes.

Further tests are being carried out in the US before the substance can be approved for human use.

At this juncture, scientists are of the opinion that a combination of the spider’s venom with an existing drug for erectile dysfunction - such as Viagra, Cialis or Levtra could produce better results.

Pharmacies and local drug stores will have to stock up on Panadol or paracetamol because suddenly there will be a worldwide epidemic of housewives suddenly ‘having a headache’.

Populations statistics show a drop in births in Japan

tokyo

Statistics show that the number of children in Japan are at a record low and are expected to continue falling. As of 1 April, there were 17.38 million children aged 14 or below in the country - down 140,000 from last year.It has been on the decline for 26 years.

This poses problems to the country where a small number of productive citizens has to support the large number of elderly citizens. Life span has lengthened due to better medical facilities and a more health conscious population.

Correspondents say the current trend is caused by women marrying later in life and having fewer children. When you transplant this article to Malaysia, you will see there is also some parallel. More women are delaying marriage plans in favour of a higher education and career advancement. Families are getting smaller and starting later. In consequence, the number of children are limited.

Living in condominiums does not augur well for large families. Increased living costs and education makes it a necessity to practice birth control. This phenomenon affects the different communities in varying degrees. One fine day, the demographics of the nation will noticeably be different and the whole political equation landscape will forever be changed.

Just as a thought to female readers: Do not wait. A Buddhist monk once quipped to me or at least I think he was just jesting : Bengbeng, somewhere out there is a soul waiting to be reincarnated. The child is waiting to be born. It is the child’s destiny. Let it happen. Be a good parent. The reincarnation cycle must go on.

Man kills another in jealous rage

murder

A very sad thing happened in Sibu on Thursday night. A man believed to be a labourer/blacksmith was beaten to death by his ex-girlfriend’s boyfriend.

The deceased, Ringgit was from Ulu Selangau in Mukah. An auxiliary policeman saw them fighting but did not stop as he was in a hurry. When he returned a little later, Ringgit was already dead. Ringgit had a swollen forehead and face, and a hole at the back of his head.

Two persons, a woman (the deceased’s ex-girlfriend) and her grandfather were arrested to assist the police in their investigations. Another man was later arrested. The girl apparently had agreed to marry Ringgit but jilted him a few days before the marriage.

It is believed the girl had several boyfriends. No woman or man is worth murdering for. To read more, here
