You might try assigning him an educational task to accomplish, using his pc of course, before playing. Yup, kids today have it made… and they will be saying the same about their kids, lol.

You really gotta install Adobe Photoshop so he can unleash his potential ;p MS Paint is a good start if he loves to experiment things (trial and error – that’s how I learned my way around computers). I wish I started early on photoshop.
