The most embarrassing moment in my life
A cheeky niece of mine on myspace.com challenged me to write this post entitled the most embarrassing moment of my life. So, here goes. Remember, you promised to visit me this Christmas!
It had been a hectic day. I drove home from work, changed and rushed to the community hall. I was one of the invited guests and sat on stage. I was a little overdressed in a long-sleeved shirt and tie. I removed the tie immediately. Anyway, I was invited to sit on one of the few sofa-like chairs on stage normally reserved for ‘distinguished guests’.
I was reluctant but it was pointless to resist the urgings of the kind uncle who told me to fill up the space because some noted local personality couldn’t turn up.
Then, the speeches began. The function was to collect funds for a local charity. It was a well delivered speech and could make hearts bleed due to its sincerity. At the end of the speech, the speaker with a milo tin came over for a donation. I was the person nearest to him. He stopped. The reporters and photographers were ready. Everybody was waiting for me to make the first donation before moving down the row.
I was embarrassed to be in the spotlight. I hastily took out my wallet and iiiks! I had brought my travelling wallet. In it were some USD, Thai Baht and Indonesian Rupiah. My face turned red. No Malaysian ringgit. Reporters were still there. Everyone looked at me expectantly. There were smiles of encouragement.
I found a 50 sen coin in my trouser pocket. It was all the Malaysian currency I had. I put it in the donation tin. As it landed it made a loud ‘clang’ sound’. It was picked up by the microphones and the sound was greeted by a few nervous smiles, giggles and which turned into loud guffaws amongst the audience as they realized the meaning of the sound. I swear my face turned red as a tomato.
Later after the formalities, lots of people came over to talk to me and were very friendly. You could say I was the hit of the evening hahahha. I was invited to join their committee
That single embarrassing moment won me more friends than I normally would in a year. I recently met one of them. And..yes he remembered hahhahahahahahahah.
That dear friends and readers, is an account of the most embarrassing moment of my life.
