Shearwey Ooi Ying Ying case solved
Video from The Star
Ying Ying’s father
In my post yesterday, I was taken in by Jess Teh who claimed her daughter disappeared after she left the toddler Shearwey Ooi Ying Ying in her car to pay a parking ticket. Police have since remanded her.
This story shocks the whole nation. Sometimes when one makes a wrong move, every successive move is already doomed. Jess Teh, the child’s mother (according to The Star) met Ong, a former karaoke lounge manager, currently unemployed about a year ago and they moved in together about three months ago. Since then, her life can’t have been too good.
She made a wrong choice. What we know so far is that the neighbours claim they often quarreled. However some say they were a loving family.
Kudos to the cops for solving the case so swiftly. It could have been the perfect crime. If the body had not been found, perhaps they could have got away with it. Public sentiment favored her. She even made a public appeal for help and the kind Penangites were more than eager to help out.
Meanwhile state MCA Wanita chief Ooi Siew Kim said,
“In the true Malaysian spirit, people from all races rallied to find the little girl. Without so much publicity, the perpetrators may have got away scot-free,†she said yesterday.
Some unconfirmed sources now say Teh now claims that Ying Ying had drowned in a plastic bathtub. Only her boyfriend, Ong was in the apartment when she died on Thursday.
Let us pause a moment to speculate what could have happened. Jess Teh found Ying Ying dead when she returned home from work. She could have reported the matter to the police but instead possibly to shield themselves from scandal or to protect her boyfriend, she could possibly have agreed to help get rid of the body.
This would qualify her as an accomplice if it is indeed true. But she publicly made the story about leaving the child unattended. This implies some sort of complicity.
I speculate that Jess Teh was overwhelmed by the circumstances and made all the wrong moves. Some people have described her as a loving mother. The police have classified the case as murder. She will have to face the consequences if found guilty by a court of law.
Teh is in the midst of getting a divorce from her businessman husband Ooi Eng Chew. Sherway’s dad arrived at the airport and was immediately mobbed by members of the media. At moments like these, what grief he must be feeling. He might be thinking a thousand ‘ifs’ but he should not blame himself.

I don’t know if she died by accident, but if not, how can anyone take another person’s life? What was going through their minds?
Even if we find the guilty party and sentence them to death, will that bring back the cute little girl? What could she have become?
Was she meant to be somebody’s sweetheart, lover, wife and mother? Was she meant to be a song writer, writing lyrics that inspire us, make us remember our most intense memories? Was she meant to be a brilliant scientist? A caring doctor?
We will never know.
BB: it is indeed a tragedy. i saw the pics of her dad crying in the chinese press and i feel so sorry for him, so very sorry.also the innocent grandparents
It’s just very sad that love can make ppl blind and end up doing the wrong things.
BB: this is one story that deeply affects me.
We might never know what actually happened. But when we do not follow certain principle, judgments are made without thinking of the consequences. Then again, easier said than done.
