Of SMK Bawang Assan and schoolgirls ordered into fishpond for an hour over sanitary towel in toilet bowl

When Mrs Bengbeng pointed out this front page article, schoolgirls ordered into fishpond for an hour over sanitary towel in toilet bowl in The Borneo Post to me, I was stunned.

A single lady warden could force 200 boarders against their will to
squat in murky water for over an hour with their heads just above the water. There was supposed to be lightning too at that time.

At that opportune moment, the school PTA chairman turned up, took a few pics, went to the press and voila.. a news sensation :)

I was eager to find out the truth especially as to how much fear this warden could instill. It was also reported that the girls were warned to keep quiet about the whole incident or they would be further punished. The warden also ordered the students out of the water when she saw pics being taken.

I called up an old friend of mine.

“It is true there was a sanitary pad. None admitted to be the one responsible. The students were punished by the teacher who asked them to immerse themselves in water. It was to remind them really. No harm was meant and none was taken. The girls had played at that place before.”

haha, doesn’t seem to sound like a complaint or punishment at all. Everyone had fun.

It is very big news here in the local press and radio.

Our hostel warden used to punish offenders by giving ‘rottan’ strokes. C’mon, it’s part of growing up. Of course I was a good boy and made friends with my Ketua asrama….

The press wasn’t there. They depended on the PTA Chairman, the canteen guy for the info. He has a daughter studying in the school.

I have presented both sides of the coin :)

the parents can go dip that teacher in the water!

BB: we wait for further developments in the press. it was on the radio this morning :)

Let’s all go dip in the water and see if it’s dirty and murky!

BB: it is quite far from Sibu town and accessible thru Igan Bridge

Hahaha… goes to show how a neat little nick on a little finger can become a major amputation of a whole limb after the news is passed on from one mouth to another…

BB: it depends on perception and facts available :). I am so glad you come to my blog. I been going to yr blog off and on for a long time but i had a problem in writing comments.

Maybe we need to hear both sides of the story.

Frankly, I don’t think this seems to be a heavy punishment at all - considering that toilet manners are important and the level of toilet cleanliness in our country leaves a lot to be desired.

All part of growing up I say… as long as the warden knew what she was doing and risks of anything happening are minimal.

Still a much better punishment than to have everyone given one stroke of the rotan.

    BB: agreed

I read in The New Strait Times that the waste from the canteen flows directly into the filthy pond. This is so sick! So uncivilized! *shakes head*

BB: guess we will jus have to wait for new developments but the NST report was flawed

This is a very strange punishment. How can she punish everyone for one person’s wrong?

  10. Bengbeng on 23 July, 2007

Adino, what would you suggest? She could place a prefect in every toilet and inspect them every time before and after they leave the toilet? :)

Counseling, advise and repeated talks and threats of punishment didnt work. They used their bare hands to dip into the toilet bowl to fish it out very often coz it was blocking the shit from going down creating a stink and shortage of toilets.Metal tongs couldnt work because of a bend in the structure of toilet bowls.

It is also not fair to the prefects and teacher to fish out the sanitary pads.

The PARENTS should be punished too, eh? If the children are not disciplined and can’t follow simple instructions after repeated reminders, perhaps the PARENTS should be hauled up for a meeting? Just a thought.

    interesting thought :)
