SMK Bawang Assan-soaking case settled

Pic courtesy of the Borneo Post
It is all over. The soaking incident has been settled amicably. Warden Wee Yim Pien hugged SRDC Councillor Evelyn Collin Holly signifying the crisis in SMK Bawang Assan is over. The parents present displayed no animosity. Most considered it a non issue blown up by the press. They have lived in hostels before too. They understand the problems faced by the school . En bloc they gave their support to the school.
Jimmy Khiu, the chairman of the PTA seemed glad the issue was settled. He has been under a lot of flak too. Not many support his ‘crusade’ with some questioning his motives. Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh has handled himself admirably in this case. There have been murmurs of approval. This might translate into real votes at future elections. Perhaps his experience in the education ministry helped.
DAP Wong Ho Leng found himself effectively sidelined. Some staunch supporters of his were also disappointed by his non comprehension of the real issue at stake. State education director, Rabiah Johari handled the situation well. Her remarks were neutral but constructive. Charles Tiong, the Division education director handled the case professionally thus keeping the situation under control. He didn’t over-react.
A notable disappointment was the STU or the Sarawak Teachers Union. It did not make any significant contribution to resolving the issue. STU president William Ghani Bina must find his post stressful this year with so many problems cropping up. People are beginning to wonder as to the role of the STU and its effectiveness. Teachers in Sibu in particular are terribly disappointed with its perceived ‘toothless’ nature.
It is hoped that Ms Wee will not let this episode kill her love for teaching and may she continue to be a good teacher and warden in the years to come.
I would like to end this post by quoting from Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers’ Union vice chairman Sajali Ojek.
“If teachers and headmasters or principals were to follow the book strictly when meting out punishment, many problematic students would be kicked out of school. Instead they used their discretion in addressing students with disciplinary problems.” Not totally relevant to this issue but a point worth noting.

Glad to know there’s a happy ending to this story.
It is the best ending possible
win win situation. it couldnt end any other way..she had the support of the local people..the people who matter in this particular situation.
Actually… I do agree that it is super frustrating trying to get girls NOT to throw their pads into the toilets..because it blocks up everything..and like floods, there will be a backflow..and all the disgusting shit will fly out!
I think what I would do, is make every girl go dig their hands in there and fish it out themselves. I hope then, they will know how irritating this problem is!
Ha ha..sorry…I too was from a all-girls’ school..I just wonder if it happens to co-ed schools????
It is a co-ed school
Yeah.. finally everything is back to normal. If Ms Wee is not a good teacher, she can always keeps her eyes shut and let the students suffer without a functioning toilet. I agreed with Mott. I think soaking them in the pond is much lenient compared to asking the students to put there hand in the bowl and dig out the pad.
I am disappointed with William Ghani’s perfomance too. I think he actually waits and see others’ opinions before he dares to point out his view.
BB: I think STU has a problem communicating with its members. Does it have a website?
