Korean hostage crisis

While the whole world’s focus is on the Korean hostages in Afghanistan, the Afghans themselves find themselves in a quandary. They are helpless against the action of the Taliban.

Ordinary Afghans fear BBC-possible military actionThere have been reports of a military build up in Ghazni province. The authorities in Afghanistan have dropped leaflets to the south-west of the capital, Kabul, warning people of a possible military operation there. But reports of an operation being launched to free the hostages have been denied.

In the past, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has exchanged prisoners for hostages before but the government has made it clear this is no longer the policy.It could well spawn an industry.

The BBC correspondent says the troop presence may well be a tactic to try to bring the crisis to a peaceful conclusion.

So far Pastor Bae Hyung-kyu and 29-year-old Shim Sung-min, a former IT worker have been killed.

I share the despair of the Korean people.Meanwhile Kuala Lumpur condemns the taking of of the Koreans hostage. On the international front, Asean and its three dialogue partners, China, Japan and South Korea, that are holding their annual meeting here have issued a statement expressing deep concern over the abduction of innocent citizens.

    No matter how bleak their chances may seem, we know there is also some chance of hope.
