The old parts of town have poor drainage and stagnant water accumulates in the drains. It is very dirty. However to these kids it is very far from their minds as they play and frolic in the water. I sometimes wonder if their parents know they are playing in the drain.
flooding-sibu-drain

overflow
Occasionally when it rains, the water doesnt flow fast enough and the dirty water overflows.

bukitaup1

This place is at the foot of a small hill and is called Bukit Aup or Stone Mountain if literally translated into English. It used to be very clean and you could see the fish clearly. The water is filled with fish. Now through poor maintenance it has become very dirty. A look at this pic might give the impression it is very clean though :(

rejang-river

This is the mighty Rejang River. It is not strictly dirty but polluted due to activities upstream but dirty = polluted? The timber industry is a very important pillar of the local economy. Would you believe this brown yellowish water was once bueish green?

I am going outstation and will be away at a beach by the South China Sea where there is no internet or hand phones.

I might not be able to answer all comments or visit every body until I come back the end of next week. My sincere apologies :)

Have a nice weekend every body.

Interesting photographs and they point up a increasing problem throughout the world. I live in the U.S. and my neighborhood lake doesn’t allow swimming because it’s not clean enough. I hope you have a good time at the beach, and I hope the water isn’t dirty.

the south china sea cannot be dirty :) it is too big and renews itself ;)

I was thinking also of a part of the metropolis here in the Philippines while reading your post. All the trash in the river and unattended drainage result into flash floods. A little rain and some areas are soaked in water, dirty water.

  5. great shots for this weeks theme!!

To be young and carefree again… I don’t know if our rivers and lakes were as dirty then as they are now or not but we sure had a lot of fun in them. Hope you have a wonderful time at your clean beach :-)

we got those dirty waters too when it rains here

  13. How could anyone swim in the dirty poluted river!? Yucks.

parents must exert some kind of control

  14. Poor drainage and stagnant water brings on tons of diseases. The economy is destroying our beautiful lakes, rivers and creeks, due to draining into them. It is a shame. Great photos, and have a good weekend.

I wouldn’t want to go in to that drain. Yikes!

    Hayppy Holiday and Happy Merdeka!

  16. Unattended drainage system and the ignorance of human caused terrible pollution problems throughout the world. Pollution causes dirtiness. Nice photos this week. It did show that relevant authorities ought to look seriously into these problems.

I still remember the milo susu or teh susu river scene in Sarawak – shows how dirty is the river.. and sometimes we can see rubbish floating on the river surface ;)

Sometimes children can be oblivious to the dangers of dirty water and only think of the fun. Ugh.
