Lydia Shum in ICU
Lydia Shum, 60, also known as Fei Fei is reported to be in ICU. Her former husband, Adam Cheng Siu-chow, who visited her at 5.30pm, said her condition had stabilised. Shum’s aspiring singer daughter Joyce Cheng Yan-yee and the wife of late director Chang Cheh, 20, had no comments to give.
South China Morning Post reported that the semi-conscious Hong Kong actress was rushed to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Thursday and later to the Queen Mary Hospital.
It is rumored that she suffers from pleural effusion, which is a complication of liver cancer tumors and bile duct cancer. There are police officers at the ICU to keep the media frenzy under control.
Her medical condition has been under media gaze since September 2006 when she had 32 gallstones extracted. Then, she was diagnosed with cancer of the liver and gallbladder. She had a 2.7kg tumour removed after an eight-hour long operation and, since then, she has been in and out of hospital many times. Shum has a history of cholangitis, diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure.
She has legions of fans in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, England, America, Canada and in countries where there are Chinese communities. She is much loved as the kind, fat woman and two generations of fans have grown up with her. She was always very particular with her hair as it was her signature. None could beat her when it came to comedy and box-office appeal.
Recently there have been moves to push her daughter into the movie scene but success has been limited. Perhaps things like these take time. Adam Cheng too has been very much a staple of Hong Kong movies and series. He is very good looking but has never seriously been thought of as a heart-throb but as the friendly guy next door. Together the couple outshines most other couples in box-office appeal.
Update: 24 hrs after the operation, Lydia sitting up straight and able to eat noodles
