Rainy day in Sibu and my newly poured cement

pre mix concrete lrry

Today was a disaster. I had plans to lay my concrete today. But the weather seemed a little downcast. I was reluctant to have it done. But the pre-mix concrete lorry arrived and told me I had to accept delivery or I would be charged anyway. The help I paid for had also arrived.

The lorry made me realize how big a task it was. I looked at the help and then realized I could stand by and let them do all the work. They did. I stood on the sidelines like a big time boss. If I had a cheroot in a mouth and a protruding belly, I would have made a perfect boss pic :)

wet-concrete

Two hours later the heavens opened and it poured. Oh man, it really poured! :( :( :( You can see for yourself the cement is all wet. It however caused no major damage. I am just keeping my fingers crossed and hoping for the best and being positive.

sand-and-cement

I have also ordered the sand and cement. I was advised to let a professional lay the tiles. Something about neatness and precision. The tiles cost me another RM1600.00. If I had ordered White Horse tiles it would have cost me lots more. They are more quality tiles I am sure but totally out of my budget.

Mrs Bengbeng helped me shovel the sand out of the way into my car porch or I wouldn’t be able to park my car. We did it in record time. We then carried the bags of cement out of the way. Mrs Bengbeng was very sporting about that. A typical Foochow wife, very supportive of her husband.

sink-stand

I found out why I couldn’t figure out the sink. They forgot to deliver the sink stand. I called them and they said Mrs Bengbeng didn’t order it nor any of the accompanying accessories. No wonder it was so cheap. The sink cost me RM66.00. If Mrs Bengbeng had ordered the square blue sink it would have cost me RM38.00 but it was out of stock

The good news is that Mrs Bengbeng is back one day early and the bad news is that she is cross with me for the mess the house is in. I have only two hands. With the workers in and out of the house using the toilets etc the house is in a mess big time. :( Scratching my head. Even Benghui has been avoiding the idiot box, the telly and sitting quietly pretending to read. One of the pipes has burst too adding to the turmoil in the house. I am too tired to fix it. I save a big barrel of water and I switch off the mains.

I will leave it until tomorrow. it is 2245 p.m. and I need a rest badly.

Same happen to me many years ago when laying the workshop floor…RAIN! But I was well prepared, I covered it over with black plastic. Better than nothing I guess. But nothing beats a fine day for concreting.

I had nothing to cover it :( Inexperienced. But that’s jus an excuse. I wasn’t prepared for the rain. It never crossed my mind

I enjoy reading your blog. I am an american who married a pretty Hokkien girl from Sibu in 1994. We live in the U.S. (Oregon) but we built a house in Sibu in 1999, and her family lives in it. I was last there in Dec-Jan of 2007. We had to do some house repairs also during that time.

Your blog helps me get a “slice of life” of Sibu.

    Thanks!

Glad to know you too :) Hopefully we can meet next time you are around :)

I notice that you fish and have a boat. I live on the Rogue River and fish quite a bit, (I fly fish). I fly fished in Sibu when I was there. It was at a small lake where you pay to fish. It was fun. I went there with my wife’s father. We get along well. I was the only white guy there, and the only person fly fishing, so I think I was entertainment for the day.

Would you take me on your boat?

I dont have a boat. The boat u saw was probably from an ad I wrote. We rent a boat when the need arises. The boat itself is berthed in Mukah..that is about 3 hours away from Sibu by road. I have a friend who ran such a business where u pay to fish n pay according to the catch. Ask yr wife. If it is near Kwang Hua it is probably my friend’s place. There are many fruiting trees there.

It is about 30km from my place n accessible thru the Igan bridge.

Oh poor BengBeng. Renovation work is like that, just take rest when you can - everything will come together soon, I’m sure :-)

The place did have many fruit trees, and a small road on the way in, wood house on the left. My wife did not go, so she would not know the location. The people that ran it were really nice to me (every one was).

I have a 16 foot aluminum boat here on the Rogue with a mercury jet.

probably the same place..wow..u have a 16ft aluminium boat…i can imagine the fun u have .
