Maybe he has been swept off his feet. Ah…KL people not like small town people …he barely had time to sit down hahahahhaah. Mrs Bengbeng said I am sadistic not giving him a time to rest.

Photohunters : I love Sibu

sibu-jetty

I live a blessed life. I live in Sibu and I love Sibu. this is the view I see almost every single day. At sunset, the view is superb from this angle. It is just that at the right moment when the sunset is superb the camera is not with me or the batteries are weak etc etc :)

sibu-wharf

Another view of the same scene.

I love the river and I love to see the boats and activity along the river. This is the Rejang River. Once the water was clear and pristine. Now it is the color of chocolate drink or cocoa. This is due to logging activities upstream

Have a great weekend every body.

UPSR results are out and parents’ expectations

Now that the UPSR results are out, schools in Sibu and parents are heaving a heavy sigh of relief. There is this tremendous pressure to perform. Students are busy from morning till night almost seven days a week in the rush to be ahead in examinations.

It is this mentality among the non-Bumiputeras. The prevailing thought is the government gives priority to Bumi children so my children will have to make double, triple efforts for the same measure of success as a Bumiputera child. So the non-Bumiputera parents spend more time and spend a huge chunk of their income on their children’s education. The children are under tremendous pressure from the age of four or five.

Scam involving Sibu businesswoman believed to run into millions

The folks of Sibu are stunned by the number of victims a woman had single-handedly conned in Sibu. As more and more victims come forward, the amount involved has reached RM1.5 million. But the figure is expected to be much, much higher but some victims may chose not to report as they see no point in doing so.

The largest amount conned is RM270 000 and the smallest is RM20 000. There is speculation her husband might be involved but investigations are still going on. The 32- year-old woman had name dropped a number of influential people in Sibu society to build up her credentials. She herself is a director of the Sibu Businesswomen Association.

Her scam was like this: She made up a federal government scheme called Urban Poverty Project that gives investment opportunities to the poor. It was alleged that the opportunities were given through the Land and Local Council Department to let them invest in land and properties. DAP Chairman Wong Ho Leng who watches over the welfare of the Sibu people like a hawk has denied the existence of such a department. The woman, speculated to be a certain Madam Y had also borrowed money from people and promised interest of between 10 and 20 per cent for a ten day period.

She also operated a tuition centre and many parents of the students were also conned. Rumors floating around town has it that with her Mercedez and with titles of six units of shophuses in her handbag coupled with her acquaintence with top society figures in Sibu, many had believed her.

Speculation has it that she is not in Sibu and that all the parties involved would like her to come back to work on a settlement.

Of ghosts,spirits and lost souls

Many do not believe in the existence of lost souls. Some say they are a figment of one’s imagination. Some say they are stories meant to scare the weak in mind and spirit.

Today I met a man. A very strong man. He told me a story I wish to share with you all. Be disbelieving or be skeptical or believe in it: it is up to you.

Male office gossip

Men are little different from women when it comes to gossip. It may happen in pubs, badminton halls, in gyms, in offices or simply in the coffee shops. However it seldom is the main event but does happen when the conversation gets dull after a while.

Most men prefer to lead a life free from being gossiped about. However some like to be known as being notorious for their prowess and exploits in certain fields like the fish that got away, the lady I almost married, I almost made a million etc etc.

I met my ex today- my first love story

I am so busy today. I met my ex today and Mrs Bengbeng is conveniently out of the way ;) . I will tell you more later if I can find the time.

Update:
I received a telephone call today to go to the airport to pick up an old friend. What a pleasure it is! It has been years since I have seen her. She is here because her son is in Sibu today.

I look at her. I look at her more closely. Little has changed. Other than the heavy jewelry draped all over her, she still looks almost the same.

I recall years ago every body thought we were meant for each other. We were both at the beginning of our careers. I was very shy then. I still am very shy except when I am hidden behind the key boards of a computer.

I finally plucked the courage to invite her to accompany me on my rounds of Hari Raya visits. To my surprise she agreed. We were both living in a small seaside town then. I arrived at her house, hair neatly combed centre parting. You could say the parting was straight as a ruler.

She came out of her house in her brand new pink sleeveless dress and black stilletto and climbed up behind me on my humble Honda-70. Inwardly I cursed myself for not washing my bike earlier. I was so proud. Many of the kampong folks in their raya best smiled as they saw Bengbeng and Wei Mee together for the very first time. I felt very proud.

After a few minutes, I felt some motion behind me. I didn’t stop. I just assumed she needed to be comfortable. Then I felt a tug on my shirt. ” Beng, Beng, ” she said. I was so happy. “This is the moment I have been waiting for,” I told myself.

“You know huh Beng, my my u know ah..my shoe , it is over there.” she said. I looked back and true enough the kampung folks were holding her black stilletto. It had slipped off her foot. Nobody dared to laugh. She was so embarrassed. i couldn’t afford a car and she refused to go out again on a motor-bike. :(

Almost mugged

Mrs BB and I were almost mugged last night. It was a difficult experience. We reached home at 10pm and Benghui sigh at nine years old was so worried for us, he started crying at 930 according to the babysitter.

Anyway he dried up the minute we turned up. It was a pleasure seeing him after the near mugging experience. I have like about 40 comments to reply and visit in return this morning but I have to wait until later. Mrs BB has a long list of chores for me to do on a list sigh sigh.

Penang is a terrible place to visit-a reply to comments

I received this comment from Saewei. I have read her blog and she is a charming person. This obviously is an issue close to her heart so she commented on this post. I will try to reply her comments as best as I can.

Her comment: in plain text. my reply in italics

For God’s sake, Penang is not the only place where those selling souvenirs have a fucking attitude. Go back to your own tourist place and visit your own tourist souvenir place and see how they treat the tourist.
How it is like in other places is irrelevant. It is just like saying brother doesn’t do his assignments too to your mum.

And Penang food, everyone around the world said that it’s good. You are the only saying that is not good.. so I guess you are the ONE with no taste at all.
I never said it was not good. I said the food was good. It is something to be proud of. It is the direct result of Penang being a fusion pot of so many different communities in the past when it was a thriving port. You missed the point. The food poisoning incident was at the hawker stalls near Gurney Drive. It was an isolated incident.

And pardon me, Penang dirty? I admit it’s not as clean as Singapore, but heck.. I bet KL is just AS DIRTY as Penang.
If MPPP keeps thinking like that, there is no room for improvement. Think big. Think how you as a blogger can highlight issues to make Penang a better place for everybody.

So you think your money very big? Paying such small amount of money and you expect 5-Star treatment from the hawkers?
How much I spend and how much you spend is irrelevant. The point is that it is money and hard earned. We deserve the best deal. Would you pay RM36.00 for an item sold for RM5.00 in Batu Feringghi? You probably wouldn’t too. Does that make you a cheap-skate? We are consumers. Just like you. I have my rights as a consumer.

I think you are just one mutha fucker that do not know how to respect others so I’m not gonna give you the respect as well. If you bloody hate Penang, please don’t come again yah as we do not welcome assholes like you to our place.
For your information, this guy on whose behalf I am blogging is an educated person, father of three, extremely generous businessman who unfortunately is too nice and very respectful to others. Perhaps this is what made the hawker decide to take advantage of him in the first place.

Thank You.

P/s: You think Penang is horrible? I think you are more horrible than Penang. You CHEAPSKATE!
Thank you saewei for your feedback. It is most welcome. I hope I have replied your comments satisfactorily.

Thanks too to philters, Carol and Jeffrey
,Anthony, keeyit, Judy, jasmine, JJ whose link doesn’t work :) ,
Bengbeng says: I didn’t expect this post to generate so much comment. I even received sms from friends and a phone call from a long forgotten friend in Jalan Boundary. Hi! Ah Bee. And Miss Lim, Miss bless you for still remembering me. I thought I had long been forgotten.

It is amazing how word of mouth spread and how mylongkang readers are actually my own friends. :)

Let us not get over-excited over the issue. I vouch for my friend’s character. He chose to voice out his feelings which actually should be a welcome feedback to the state. In terms of profile, he should the type of tourists the state welcomes. He stays in the best rooms and spends generously. He is there for business and as a tourist.

He has a right to voice out his dissatisfaction. I forgot to blog that he liked the Penang Airport very much which he took a lot of photographs of.

He raised a few key points worth noting ( in my opinion )
The often neglected sector of the tourism industry- the local domestic tourist
Preferential treatment to foreigners
Pagoda hawkers giving the tourists ‘the harrassment treatment’. It could well be that for some, it is standard sales tactic to embarrass the tourist to buy. If it is, it is in very poor taste.
He mentioned the long journey from Rasa Sayang being jammed on rainy days. I don’t see how anything can be done about that in the near future.

As for the food poisoning incident, perhaps an occasional visit by the health department would keep every body more on their toes?

As for his statement, noisy, dirty, crowded, unfriendly and hot noisy. It is his perception of Penang after being away for 25 years. He had an image of Penang as it was and when he saw so much concrete and so little greenery, it upset him. Every square inch in Penang is fully utilized be it for commercial parking of cars, motorcycles or hawkers. Where are the trees, the flowers? The open spaces for the people to live in?

It is not just about daily maintenance of drains, repairs of pot-holes but the difficult task of the city fathers to get a delicate balance between preserving the cultural heritage and development and long, long term planning.

Many of the original buildings which made Penang unique and beautiful are gone forever. The tourist spots are over exploited, notably the Pagoda and the snake temple and commercialized. The Goddess of Mercy Temple administators in Pitt street have done a good job. The beaches have been taken over by the the hotels.

He is a well traveled man. He can see and compare. Indeed every one has a right to compare. Let us look at his honest appraisal and see how wrong he is or how right he is and then look for means and ways to make Penang a better place for every body.
Another question would be like what Saewei asked indirectly: In what way is Penang different from other places. If it is no different, after some time, it will lose some of its allure, glitter and shine. Even as it is, many tourists just stop over in Penang before spending their holidays in Langkawi. Millions and millions of the tourist dollar are at stake here.

It is naive to think that the Penang economy is totally independent of the contribution of the tourist dollar to the state coffers.
