Of bicycles and Methodist Children’s Home,Sibu

This morning I bumped into a crowd of people at the Methodist Children’s Home. Upon inquiry they told me they were there to present some bicycles to the residents there.

It is a nice cheery place. Totally clean and not a scrap of litter any where. I met the people who run the place and they obviously love the children. it warms the heart to see this kind of love and devotion to the children. The children all seemed happy and were curious at the presence of visitors. They seemed to appreciate the sight of the bicycles or perhaps it is just my imagination.

bicycles

Benghui’s eyes gleamed when he saw the bicycles. I know he wants a bicycle very much but I absolutely cannot allow him a bicycle. What will happen if he learns how to cycle and insists on cycling here and there. It will not only be dangerous but a source of conflict between us and him. He doesn’t understand freedom must come with a price.

Benghui is a gregarious person. He tried to make friends shyly with these kids. But they are not of his age. They tolerated him but there was no spark. In the end, Benghui gave up :)

water-filter

They use this water filter at the orphanage. I might consider getting one. The water in Sibu is not what it used to be. The indoor filter I use gets dirty in a week.

when i read that bit about not letting benghui learn to ride a bike because he might get killed, and when u said ‘freedom has a price.’ I have to disagree. i think u may be worrying a lot for nothing. forgive me for saying this, ur love of the boy is stifling him. dont u remember u childhood? i remember u mentioned nearly killing yourself when u were young, yet u said it was a safer time. I must say i could not help laughing when i read u talking of the hairraising things u got into when u were young, and then concluding, it was all so safe then.haha. your parents must have sweated blood. but they never let u know how much they feared for u. do the same for benghui, or u will make him a v fearful boy instead of being so outgoing and gregarious.

hahha Anthony..u have a point there..but it is so hard to actually let him go…..and make mistakes by himself ;)

I have to agree!!! My mrs was like that…this cannot, that cannot…and in the end, my daughter didn’t know to cross the road, didn’t know the way home if she had to give directions, didn’t know how to buy things and pay for them and when she had to leave home for further studies, we had to send her all the way and later, she did not dare to come back on her own!! Had to force her…and now she’s learning to be more independent. Let them be…let them learn!!! Just keep one eye open…(secretly)and watch the kid grow into a man!

he is growing so fast..i find it hard to catch up :0
