The way it was this morning. I apologize for the loud music. Benghui turned on his favorite cd in the car.

slippers-in-flood My slippers floating. Water has gone down.

After the horrible experience last night and this morning, tonight is an anticlimax. After getting off from work, I used the Pulau Babi way and it was clear. Even now, although the drains are full, it has not yet come into the compound. Perhaps it is as Suituapui said, “The water has subsided quite a lot. It’s the 4th Day of the Chinese Lunar Calendar; they say the worst is on the 3rd Day…so hopefully, it is not going to be much worse. If the waters from upriver come down but there is no high tide around here, I don’t think it will be very bad, hopefully!

Many stories abound of mishaps. Some families suffered many losses due to damage to furniture especially those with older people in the home and no young people to help. This afternoon families could be seen bringing things out to dry and cleaning up as the water drained away. The strong sunshine too cheered up folks tremendously.

The busiest people around are the mechanics repairing cars, motor-bikes and the tow trucks. One guy whose land cruiser broke down in deep water late at night had to call in a tow truck. He said he had to pay a bill of RM500.00 no questions asked.

Those who live in Upper Lanang found themselves stranded with the water so high yesterday and today. My friend reportedly tried all means to report for work and in the end resorted to hitching a ride from a lorry.

Noticeably gloomy too are businessmen who suffered big losses when flood waters inundated their shops and stores. Even Daesim is rumored to be counting its losses. Most heavily affected are businesses close to the Sibu Fire Station. Furniture shops too suffered big losses. Some were heavily stocked in anticipation of increased sales due to the Chinese New Year in February. People living in the inner city are still worried as the water hasn’t subsided fast enough. It seems to have accumulated there and taking a long time to drain away with poor drainage in the area.

However more will be known when the situation returns to normal. I anticipate cheap sales for flood damaged goods soon. All I can say is collectively Sibu is heaving a sigh of relief the situation is improving.

However it remains to be seen how it will be like in other areas and the situation later tonight.

Suituapui: Gosh…looks like now I’m suituapui, weatherman! LOL! BTW, u should have avoided that stretch of road in the video, past that secondary school. May get flooded even during ordinary days if there’s a heavy downpour. Poor drainage.
