A state of uncertainty has gripped Pakistan following the assassination of ex-Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Killed in a suicide attack, Benazir struck a colorful figure as she campaigned for what she believed in and across Pakistan. At least 22 people were also killed with her and there were also injuries reported.

Angry supporters of Benazir have taken to the streets to express their anger. President Pervez Musharraf has urged people to remain calm but it remains to be seen if he still has control over the supporters of Benazir who are angry and grieving. Security forces have been placed on a state of “red alert” nationwide.

Eyewitnesses: Ms. Bhutto had stood up through the sunroof of the white Toyota Land Cruiser. She waved at supporters who were cheering her. A “thin man” on a motorcycle, carrying an AK-47 rifle, fired two shots, one into Bhutto’s neck, and she collapsed, falling down into the vehicle. The assailant then detonated an explosive. Bhutto was rushed to Rawalpindi General Hospital where she died at 6:16 p.m. local time (1316 UTC).

Some analysts say this is a sign of the creeping “Talebanisation” of Pakistan. Radical Muslims calling for Islamic law, and fiercely opposed to the US, have become increasingly active in Pakistani politics in recent years.

P.S.: Just saw the news when I logged online that Benazir Bhutto had been assasinated. Basically, it is all politics but it stems from the Hindu-Muslim conflict that has plagued the violence-torn country since time immemorial. Hence, everyone should all see the importance to preserving peace and harmony in our own country and practise UNDERSTANDING & TOLERANCE among our brothers and sisters…regardless of race, sex or religion.
