Grandpa wants me to be a doctor
Everybody wants to be a success. Most people dreamed of being a doctor. It is a glamorous job in the sense that there is glamor in helping people and saving lives. When we miss the boat, we hope our children will become a doctor and when they miss the boat and study IT instead
, we hope for their grandchildren
Benghui : Daddy, daddy. I have something important to talk to you.
Bengbeng: What?
Benghui: Kong kong wants me to be a doctor. He wants me to be a doctor like Uncle Bernard. I cannot. I don’t want. Because i am not a doctor. If a sick man comes to see me I don’t know what medicine to give. I only know my vitamins, flu medicine and fever medicine. I am so small. Everybody is so big. How can I be a doctor?
Bengbeng: You grow up to be a good man. Earn an honest living. Be a doctor if you want to when the time comes.
Mrs Bengbeng: Next time, if I am sick, I see you and save money.
Benghui: Money? Money?

Just let the kids decide what to be when they grow up. The most important is he or she grow up leading to an honest way of living.
He must lead an honest life. I don’t care what he does but it must be n honest living
I guess it’s only normal for parents (or grandparents, for that matter) to behave like that - it is because they missed the boat once before, that’s why they hope their children do not miss it too. Actually, there is plenty of other professions that the child may be interested in. It’s good enough to let the child know that being a doctor is noble and highly-regarded - but ultimately leave the child to make his own decisions and pursue his own desired ambition.
If he can be a doctor, I can smile in my sleep
benghui is very smart.
Money? Money? Typical!
Let him decide when he grows up. My mum also wanted me to pursue my studies in medic but I told her that I dun like to look at sad people. Where got happy go to clinic or hospital one… unless the one expecting. So, give and take. I decide to sign up for pharmacy but too bad, I lost by a point and given education instead. Not too bad actually and I might get my promotion soon.
best wishes on yr possible promotion
I think I’ve said this before - Pull, don’t push!
CASE No. 1: This boy wanted to pursue a career in music (Already reached diploma level) but the parents wanted him to do pharmacy and forced him to go to the Science stream. He spent two years, refusing to study, did not do his homework…and even his appearance changed from a good looking boy to someone that looked possessed. Managed to pass SPM but could only qualify for Form 6 Arts.
CASE No. 2: Top student, JPA scholar in US, broke down and now a vegetable. Mother putting pressure on younger son in Form 5 - very nice boy and not very smart - and when I talked to him, he just broke down in tears…
Just two of the many cases I’ve encountered…and my heart goes out to all these poor, depressed miserable kids on the verge of a mental breakdown, whose lives have been ruined by selfish, kiasu parents going all out to achieve their own dreams.
Bernard must be very proud. When I was young I dream of becoming lotsa things. Name it; policeman, soldier, detective, doctor - TV influence but then when I grow up I find it a little difficult to determine what I want to do because at the moment as long as it give me money is good for me. Mom insisted that I be a teacher bah but I didn’t. I took up economics instead. Dad wanted me to be an engineer .. Ha ha ha. I still don’t know what I want to be la but as for now I’m just somebody who is working in a bank. - Banker?
you will be a millionaire..how about that?
when I grow up I want to be just like Bengbeng!
when i grow up i want to be just like Wuching!
that’s what i told my sis who is pursuing in medicine
now i just need to get one of my brothers to be a lawyer … hehehe
you will be PM one day?
Wahh.. Benghui, you can be anything your heart desires as long as you put your heart into it and work hard!
High-5!
