Weekend snapshot: Scene at a filling station
For this week’s weekend snapshot I highlight an issue. it is a positive development in my town, Sibu. It used to be that jobs in filling stations were filled by young people. However with the growing affluence of the people, young people are now looking for better jobs. These jobs are now taken by an older generation. They help supplement the family income and help pass their time.
It is a win-win situation.
Happy 2008 to you all.

I beg to disagree. Young people today are over-spoilt and over-pampered. They don’t want to work at petrol stations…in the heat and having to work long hours. They would rather work in air-conditioned supermarkets and restaurants. According to the manager(ess) of one petrol station, after the public exams, some students may go to work…but they do not last a day or two. Complain, complain, complain…that’s all they do!…And what do they do when they get their first paycheck? Buy a new handphone! Go and dye their hair, looking like an escapee from Sepilok Rehabilitation!!!

ha? no more ah moi come fill up your tank anymore?
working at petrol station is still the best part time job.
Very nice news! Thanks for sharing this with us. God bless.
that’s great!
Happy New Year!
It is interesting how job options change with a changing economy. Food for thought. Have a great new year ahead.
Very good post.
Happy New Year!
That’s good news. At least the old ones still get jobs.

Happy New Year

A very HAPPY NEW YEAR 2008 to Bengbeng, Mrs Bengbeng and Benghui. Wishing you the best of everything in the year ahead. Have to work one day extra - 29 days in February!
…..Hey! Forgot that I’ve retired!!! He he he he he!!!
I am so jealous
Around here we have to pump our own gas, no workers except inside. But you can pay at the pump also so you really don’t even need a person there. Quite different from the station in your picture.
My Weekend Snapshot photo is up too!
Hi, bengbeng, a blessed new year to you and yours.
Happy New Year 2008!
I see more elderly uncles at the pump station than youngsters. Somehow I prefer the nice old uncles compared to the youngsters. Uncles always wear that nice friendly smile on their faces, on the other hand, the youngsters tend to pull a long face each time.Which at times make me wonder, “I owe him few millions?”
Have a great 2008 in your revamped home
It’s a pleasure to drop by your blog n Happy New Year 2008
In Perth, all service stations are “self serve”. You fill your car, then go inside and pay the clerk. I guess the oil companies don’t care much about customers these days. In fact many petrol station sites have closed down and the land redeveloped for other purposes. Makes finding a petrol station harder and harder.
But many young people here find jobs at local fast food stores and supermarkets, quite easy to get a job there.
it used to b self service but customers go where there is service Happy New Year to you and family!
Most of the staff at petrol stations in Singapore are the elderly too. Young people have too many choices when it comes to finding jobs.
Happy New Year!
Today’s young people have more opportunities, at least those who are presented with opportunities. Working at gas stations are not preferred here by college or high school students. They are more for people who were not able to graduate school (except for managers who are required to have college degrees). Young people opt to work at Starbucks, call centers and the like. More money, better exposure and better networking.
Anyway, happy new year! Your blog is one of the blogs worth reading. More blessings to you and your family.
