I went shopping today with Mrs Bengbeng. I am still shell-shocked. Almost everything has gone up in price. If nothing is done soon, things will go out of control. The Rm50.00 is handled randomly in our daily lives now when compared to the past it was considered a big note.

I bumped into my friend this afternoon. He was lamenting the fact that it didn’t seem like new year. He had no new influx of customers or anything of that kind. It was like it was not new year season. Perhaps the people did not have confidence in the economy. Perhaps they decided to economize and save money. Or perhaps the days of Chinatown shops are over with their difficult to get parking lots.

My friends and I have been feeling very subdued today. You could say we are in a state of shock to read of a case in which a mother, Wong Hung Yung strangled her child and then later committed suicide. Perhaps it is because one of my colleagues live near the woman.

I discovered this place only a few days ago. I first saw it when I was with wuching but I didn’t realize it was open to the public. I must admit I know little about the history of Sibu town itself other than the first Foochow pioneers arrived in Sibu on board the M.S. Hong Bee about a century ago. It has developed by leaps and bounds since then.

For Asians there is this respect and reverence for the dead. I remember a neighbor of mine who had a feud with another going to the other party’s funeral and thus ending the feud. There is little relevance to taking it beyond the grave.

We were fortunate enough to be invited to visit a long house at Sungai Assan. We were given a warm welcome including the traditional tuak and miring. When the cock was brought out to be sacrificed, all parties decided to let the cock live. The ceremony was mainly symbolic.
