Where have all the shoppers gone in Sibu?

market street

I bumped into my friend this afternoon. He was lamenting the fact that it didn’t seem like new year. He had no new influx of customers or anything of that kind. It was like it was not new year season. Perhaps the people did not have confidence in the economy. Perhaps they decided to economize and save money. Or perhaps the days of Chinatown shops are over with their difficult to get parking lots.

I went to check out Ngiu Kee, Everise and Ta Kiong. It was also the same with Parkson and Daesim. Perhaps the cake is shrinking but I think the most likely reason is that the shoppers are now frequenting Everwin, Farley and Sing Kwong. Perhaps it is too early but I noticed the shoppers are not as frenzied as before although some luxury items are now gone from the shelves at Ta Kiong.

You’re right about people being careful of the economy. This year the CNY mood seem quite subdued.

I hope things improve. I wish I was in Sibu for CNY. I can’t get that kind of food here. My favorite thing is Sibu is to go to a coffee shop with my wife’s father, and drink Tiger beer and eat peanuts. He just has coffee, and maybe some other snacks. Since I can drink alot of Tiger beer, the Sibu economy gets an immediate infusion of capital. Better than the fed rate cut! :)
