Sibu foochow Ah Moo weird sense of humor

old woman

Character : late 70s, loves evening walks around her compound and over the fence chats with neighbours

Commenting on sounds of frequent police sirens and the visit by Prime Minister Ahmad Abdullah Badawi to Sibu:

He comes today. He will bring present. Make nice sounds. People take pics. He should have come on the third day of the CNY. Then we Sibu people can give him a present of our own. He can experience for himself the dirty, ugly swirling floodwaters we have to endure so often. Maybe if he knew, he would never dare to come back again. I am not correct huh? He is responsible for everything. I heard on the radio. He said he is still in control. ( havoc breaks out and everybody present bursts out laughing ) :) :)

In editing this post I don’t know why it seemed so funny that we all laughed but she has a valid point. This flooding issue has been allowed to drag on for too long. The government to give them credit are resurfacing some roads making them higher etc but most efforts are geared towards addressing the effects rather than trying to deal with the root causes.

Are there any viable solutions to this perennial problem?

something need to be done with the drainage system. surfacing the road will not work, especially when all the drains are clogged. in malaysia, we tend to give reactions to problems, not actions. under sleeping pm it’s even worse. just look at all his ‘reactions’. he snipped the buds, never take care of the roots. that ah moo is right when she pointed that out. bragging that you are in control doesn’t prove anything.

Bongkersz has a point! Improve the drainage system! Make the existing drains bigger and deeper. Build new monsoon drains in flood prone areas, but knowing what SIBU PEOPLE are like, who will sacrifice a bit of land from their frontyard for the purpose?

Resettling those in the flood prone areas may be an alternative. Usually they are badly congested and drainage is poor…and the houses are in such terrible conditions, most of them like the Leaning Tower of Pisa! But knowing what SIBU PEOPLE are like, who is willing to move?

However, let’s not be SO narrow-minded and look at this in our own localised situation. From a broader point of view, flooding has occured all over the world lately - even Sydney Australia and also England. The root of the problem is GLOBAL WARMING. Before you point your finger at others for not doing this or that, ask yourself this? What have YOU done, no matter how insignificantly small, towards reducing global warming? As the proverb goes, “Look after the pennies! The pounds will look after themselves!”

So deep there STP, a different side of you. But yeah, I agree with improving the drainage system. It’s not that there’s nothing can be done. Like what you and me discussed the other day, there’s a lot of things that needs money and more money in order to be implemented. Money that will make some people go rich and money that will make people suffer. remember when we talked about the pendalaman sungai? that is one of the problems that we have here. It has been there and really, as long as some not so worthy people is in control, no matter what you do, it won’t change a thing. sad but true!

Suituapui, either they sacrifice a bit of their land for the good purpose, or they sacrifice the whole piece of land when the flood come. They will know which one to choose :) money, interesting to note that sarawak, being the biggest state in malaysia but received very little fund from the federal how many things can be carried out? guys, you know what to do.
