Photohunters : Theme-free.(White chickens traumatized by slaughter scene)

photohunters2mo1

Photohunters theme this week is free : For my entry this week I highlight a chicken family. They live for free with no rent and free food and are treated like royalty. Free

These are not the ordinary chickens bred for the kitchen. Previously they were very tame. They would approach any human and love to be petted and touched. However during the Chinese new Year they saw the Indonesian maid slaughtering their parents for the reunion dinner.

Pics show the chickens’ backyard..their free home.

They made a lot of noise and went wild apparently scuttering around the back yard. Since then they refuse to approach human beings and hide here and there hoping not to be noticed. They are still very tame as long as no human hands approach them.

To me it is amazing how intelligent they are and it shows they may have been traumatized by the slaughtering event. Or am I putting human emotions into their behaviour?

p.s. - pics taken while I was experimenting with my new camera

So, the usual saying ‘Bird’s brains’ implying someone who is stupid is not true.

Are they your cockerals? How handsome!

i saw them while pai nien or cny visiting….they live far more luxuriously than some people in poorer countries.they even have a maid to take care of their needs and have a whole back yard full of beautiful flowers n trees just to themselves and lots of children to take care of them.

Nice photos, at least much nicer compared to those you took using your previous camera. Or it’s because your photography skill has improved?

Perhaps the chickens understood the concept of death? The wailing of their comrades before it was slaughtered… aiseh.. kesian pulak.

the chickens were slaughtered in their presence..the chickens parents actually as they were deemed too old and the young ones could take over their place as pets

  8. napaboaniya on 16 February, 2008

The chickens were probably screaming in chicken language “Bengbeng! stop taking our photos and save us/our parents!!!!”
    heehee…

Yes, but their freedom costs them their lives eventually. This was a hard word.

My ‘free’ photo is shared…come by and visit —it’s there for your viewing, for ‘free’. Oops, no I guess not –it’s costing money to use the computer of yours and being online. Oh well, stop by for a visit, if you can!!!

  13. Krista on 16 February, 2008

I hope those chickens are enjoying their freedom in your beautiful backyard!

  14. Aleckii on 16 February, 2008

Wow, great post! And great pictures.

You’re right. Even animals have emotions, and sometimes we tend to forget about it.

My take on ‘free’ is up too, visit if you’ve got time.

  16. Lynn on 16 February, 2008

Obviously they also have emotions with how they reacted. You have a beautiful garden. The chickens will be comforted in time. :)

What a thought-provoking entry. DO animals have human emotions? They did indeed sense someething wasn’t right after the slaughter, perhaps it was instinct for survival?

  21. heather on 16 February, 2008

Great shots and very fun take.

  22. JC on 17 February, 2008

No doubt watching their kin slaughtered was traumatic… poor things…

  23. Dragonstar on 17 February, 2008

Beautiful photos - your new camera does well.

All creatures learn fear and self-preservation, even if they start out very trusting. These chickens are very pretty to look at.

  24. KwangErn on 17 February, 2008

    It’s called survival (animal) instinct.

If animals can think and reason, they would have taken over the world and human race by now. ;)

    terrifying thought isnt it?

  25. Pearl on 17 February, 2008

Oh no..must be a real nightmare for them….I hope they did not see the humans eating the dinner in front of them….hehehehe
