I have asked my friends what they will remember most about Sibu. Sibu food and Sibu floods. Today the water was quite high and flowing into the drains of my house. It used to happen every ten years or so but now it happens almost every couple of months.
To take their minds off the flood I planned to take them to buy some kong pia. The original stuff in Market Street. Big mistake. There were flood waters in the inner city areas. The road fronting Premier Departmental Store was flooded and needless to mention the area around Bomba ( fire brigade ) was flooded. The smaller roads like Tiong Hua Road, Foochow Road etc were also flooded. However it is nothing compared to what Sibuians have experienced through the years. They have become lao jiao ( old bird ) where floods are concerned.
It was not as bad as past floods although along Pulau Babi, we could see the river water being swept up onto the road. I was a little worried my car would stall. I was fortunate.
I do not know what causes these floods that we take for granted. The shop-keepers were well prepared. I saw them piling up their goods on top of counters, boxes or whatever they can find. Is it something we have to live with for the rest of our natural lives or until death we depart Sibu?
I do see some work the government does to relieve the floods e.g. raising the level of some roads etc. But almost nothing is being one to address the root of the problem whatever it is. It will need huge sums of investment and a deep sense of political commitment to push through a big project like this.
I hope I will eventually see measures taken to alleviate the problems of the people of Sibu who live in dread of the recurring floods. In the past, it was endurable as it happened only once in a blue moon. But now it is occurring on a regular basis. I have no idea be it weather or whatever that is causing this phenomenon.
Should I blame God, man or whatever?

I’m really innocent this time
Damn, got to call back home now… Thank you for the reminder here… Puchong raining cat and dog everyday too…
mayb u dream u come home tats why we flood :
That is a lot of water. I am sure I would get tired of it if it came inside.
guess nature is something we have to live with
yo ganasnyer…till now still having flood?
things r better now
Huh? Sibu now flooding ar? Wonder why my parents didnt told me.
perhaps yr place isnt affected
again? this one i was completely unaware of.
well, now u r
Hi there, as to what is causing the flooding, perhaps you will like to visit Wong Ho leng’s blog under the heading “flood in Sibu” and under sub heading “RM400 million flood mitigation futile”.
http://yippeego.com/ypwordpress/?p=175
It’s that El Nino…or La Nina, whatever they call it. In England, they had floods…and then earthquakes (and my ang moh friend said he thought it was his wife snoring! LOL!!!) and then storms and gales (and my friend said if u hit a golf ball, it comes flying back at you!!!).
Don’t expect miracles! Everything takes time! Have YOU done anything yet to ease the situation? REDUCE, REUSE and RECYCLE! Cut down use of air-conditioning at home or in the car! Walk or cycle, don’t drive! Etc…etc…etc…!!! Everybody can do something to ease the environmental problem! (And in case, you’re wondering, my electricity bill used to be RM200-300 every month…and last month it was over RM100, and this month, over RM60!!! Reduce! Reduce! Reduce!)
wuah..u r doing yr bit for the environment
After making the comment above, I believe that there many be too many new houses built at some point and therefore the drainage is unable to cope or it could be a definite sign of global warning!
Same problem in some parts of UK where they are near a river or where there are sudden influx of new housing.
this is not a city where excessive built up areas cause the problem
Time to buy a sampan!
Or invest in sampans haha~
I would blame mankind for such global natural disaster…
Since we can’t turn it around, we have to live with it. Sadly.
The problem of floods in Sibu is an issue since the first day, our forefathers stepped onto it to build a town. First and foremost, nothing can be done to rectify this matter since we are so close to the River unless they can block the water from coming into out section of the river. So no matter how high they patch or build the roads, Sibu will still flood. And if they make the roads even higher.. I’m just wondering what will happen to the shophouses and residences? Can they jack it up? That would be a sight to see. Secondly, due to Global Warming, we now have more water to contend with since it will only flow to where there is space to go. The worst scenario or best one would be that one day Sibu would be another Venice!
Ah Venice …t sounds so romantic
Perhaps sell your car and buy a boat instead?
haha i can afford only a small bicycle
Didn’t realize Sibu’s in flood AGAIN. The last time I heard this town’s in flood was last Dec, when I was in Singapore — oh well what to do? It’s been going on for the past few years; if you can’t be the solution, be a part of the problem LOL
The BN has promised to handle the proble. hopefully there will be results
