Batang Rejang bursts its banks

batang rejang bursts it banks

The Borneo Post 16th March 2008 edition

Like many others I was watching the water level of the Batang Rejang nervously yesterday. I was particularly nervous as I had to pass through Jalan Lanang. Also my blogger friends were waiting for me at Ruby Cafe. Btw it is definitely worth a visit with reasonable prices and it is very clean. The recommended dishes are prawns in butter and pandan chicken.

The flood took me by surprise as the water level rose so fast. Most badly affected areas were Jalan Lanang, Jalan Tan Sri, Jalan Khoo Peng Loong and the town centre. Jalan Tekam and Jalan Selanggan too were not spared. Residents from Jalan Hua Kiew to Jalan Kapor and beyond were similarly worried lest a repeat of the December 2007 floods occur.

This morning, the water level in the drains had gone down to almost normal.

The Sarawak Meteorological Department in Kuching confirmed that high tide began since Wednesday and would stay for a week until March 26.

I heard last night the Rescue 991 Sibu team refused to attend to a school kid who fell unconscious at a school camp coz the road was flooded. Luckily nothing happened to the poor kid. Otherwise who will be blamed, the school, the rescue department or blame it on the flood?

this is news to me . anyway i hope the kid is feeling better now

How come it’s always flooded where you are? The government doing anything to rectify the problem?
If over here, the citizens will complain until the council will have to come up with means and ideas to solve the problem. Hope everything will be back to normal - NORMAL! :)

the problem is very deep rooted n not easy to solve :(

the north east monsoon is blowing now so it is normal. and if the high spring tides are also on, than it is normal for all this flooding. all the previous years of no floods are the abnormal years, but people got used to it. Ask ur old folks and they would tell u floods used to be the norm in their day, and no one made a fuss about it. also all those new houses built, judgeing from the videos here in this blog, will have blocked the free flow of flood waters. Those high walls round the rich people’s homes act as dams. This is not to blame anyone. sibu is attracting more people to live there, and so land use is changing. Where there were farms, now there are buildings and concrete covering the earth.

Was told about flood in Long Lama. On route to Miri, residents remove the road markers in flood affected roads- so that htey can charge you RM 10 to guide you thru the floods!!!!!

this is so terrible. so unexpected.
