First I would like to apologize for readers who have left comments and I have yet to reply or visit them in return. This week itself has been a little off my regular schedule. On the other hand, it has also been an educational period. Thanks to the internet, I have been exposed to the thoughts of so many different people. I tell any aspiring politician to get a blog. Without a blog or at least a web-site you have lost an important advantage to your opponent unless you figure prominently in the official media.
The past few nights have been spent with friends making the rounds of election rallies getting caught up in the excitement. I will not make any profound political statement. But suffice to say it was a big shock to me to wake up this morning and read on malaysiakini of the amazing gains made by the opposition this 12th general elections.
The people in Penang, smack in the middle of the industrial hub and international tourism destination for example must be careful about protocol. The DAP is the state government but is an opposition party at national level. So is it a government party or an opposition party? A friend from Penang made this surprise comment, ” It is not we intended to vote for the opposition. But the government has given us no other option. We had nothing left to lose. ”
Now the states of Perak, Kelantan, Kedah and Selangor are also involved. These are also amongst the crown jewels of the country. The opposition too has made inroads into many other states. Perhaps the days of the two-party system are finally in sight after a few more elections to come. As a race we must alway move forward and progress. History tells us, a society must be dynamic to survive or it will languish into a state of complacency.
Now the opposition has one term to prove to the electorate it can deliver. The BN too will have to prove to the electorate that it deserves to be given a second chance. It will be interesting to see how the situation develops. But ultimately, the rakyat has benefited.
This is an example of peoples’ power to determine governments and all political parties should take note of this. Is this a sign of new political maturity amongst the electorate? But the consequences of this election will be profound on the future of the country and its people.
