Koay teow th’ng the quick and lazy way for small families

koay teow thng ingredientss

Today I woke up feeling so pampered when Benghui woke me up with the daily newspapers. Hey, I could get used to this life of pampering. He then proceeded to bring me a packet of chocolate milk. Mummy was busy somewhere in the house. Any way I am not used to being pampered. Believe me, it is wonderful ( smug smile :) )

Later I went to town and saw so many of the national service people loitering around town. Mentally I make a note to prepare for the day I have to let Benghui out of the nest. Our job is to prepare the kids for life and not to hold on to them for life. The day will eventually come and I know I will never be 100% ready.

I went to the market and wanted to buy some left over pork…the parts nobody wants for my dog. The butcher grinned at me and said everything was gone. The price will go up on Thursday so everybody was rushing to buy. Not a single scrap was left. He grinned this nice, ” I cannot believe it happened ” kind of smile and shrugged. I couldn’t help but gave him an equally warm smile. :)

I then thought of cooking koay teow th’ng. It is not the best way but the laziest way. I used chicken stock ( from boiling kampung chicken ), prawns and fish balls for the soup. I asked for tauge Rm0.30 among other stuff and the lady smiled and explained for Rm0.30 I would only get a handful as the price had gone up. Later when I paid and she had no change, she rounded it to the nearest ringgit. How nice :)

The vegetable seller gave me a few pieces of chilly free when she saw I wanted only three red chillies. The fish monger encouraged me to buy the smaller prawns as it was cheaper and fresher he said. This is one of the wonders of living in a small place. Everybody knows everybody and a smile is never far away :)

Anyway the koay teow th’ng tasted like instant cook koay teow th’ng sold by hawkers in West Malaysia. To give it more taste, I added some salt, pepper, light black soya sauce, and tauge. The stewed pork you see here is the remnants of the morning breakfast. Mrs Bengbeng will not touch that. Benghui loves it though :) Soft, and easy to chew. Unfortunately lots of msg.

Notice there is some scrambled egg. I had no choice. Benghui insisted on helping so I let him scramble an egg. It makes him feel useful. He likes it anyway.

hi beng beng, thanks for this happy post. it is not often bloggers write about simple things in the home that makes them happy. We hear a lot about things that go wrong, so it is verynice to read of simple things that make for a happy time. the funny thing I bet not many people will make comments about this post because happy things needs no comments, whilst bad things bring lots of comments. I prefer to share these happy times with u.

come n share these happy times. come over for a visit some day :)

I always forgot the MSG when I cooked, which is a good thing, and it makes no difference to my cooking because the dish I cooked usually have a lot of herbs/spices.

hope to sample yr cooking one day :)

Yummm! Good till the last mouthful, I’m sure, and with the egg, it must be one very nice full meal!

the key is the soup. it is super nutritious cos it is double boiled kampung chicken foochow style
