Steamboat porridge for the novice

steamboat porridge ingredients

This post is not for the serious chef. It is more for the uninitiated cook, the daddies ( like me ) who need to cook for a day, the college students living away from home, the singles living alone who need 2 meals for a Sunday and reluctant to leave the apartment or just new housewives who have been pampered by their own mummies hahaha.

I first got the idea from Puchong steamboat porridge. Basically I cooked porridge in a rice cooker. I used simple ingredients that can be bought from the supermarkets or wet markets like fish balls, prawn balls and what-nots. I added it all in when the porridge was half cooked. I also used some chicken franks. This was to tempt Benghui to eat the porridge. For seasoning I used chicken stock from chicken soup. However it isn’t really necessary. It is just a habit I am used to for all my soups. Or you can try oyster sauce.

I cooked it in a rice cooker. However you can also use left over rice, add some water and the ingredients and cook in a wok. Everything is super-flexible. Cabbage, carrots sliced thin can also be used but in limited amounts. At the last moment I added in an egg.

I served it with light soya sauce, desicated onions, some pepper, cut chillies ( not in pic ) and some vegetables. Optional :you could fry some chopped garlic in oil and use the oil and garlic to add additional flavor.

Not exactly finger-licking good but a welcome change for the family who is bored with the same stuff every day. Give it a try :) I enjoy experimenting with cooking ideas.
