Weekend snapshot-The ghost tree

WS2

pokok hantu

This is not from my garden. I had it but threw it away. It is called pokok hantu ( ghost tree ) by some Iban friends. When flowering ( 7 years once ) it grows a stalk about 20ft high and as tough as bamboo…the stalk I mean. It is a relatively rare plant in my part of the world, I believe.

pokok hantu

So it was a pleasant surprise when I saw a similar specimen a few days ago. It depends on the individual. Some associate this particular plant with certain issues, some don’t. :) This plant you see here is but a young plant. It will be quite a few more years before it begins to flower. After the flower withers, it will die and many small plants will grow all around the mother plant.

with a name like that, no wonder it is a rare plant.haha. even u threw it away once. it looked like that one u saw is in a park. i bet it is not in anyperson’s garden. we once had a plant in the garden which never flowers until late one night it put out lots of white flowers that smelt of carrion.

i threw it away bcoz my dog had torn it into shreds. :)

Hmm…pokok hantu? Do you know why they called it so? Is it because it’s haunted? Or because it could ward off bad stuff? I saw a few near UKM’s library. And as u said, they sure are tall! =)
