Green Thumb Sunday : A member of the yam species

yam

I have this plant of the yam family all over my garden. It is very hard to get rid of. Some people think of it as an ornamental plant. My question is does any one know whether its yam is safe to eat? I welcome feedback. I have quite a number of this type of plant. The biggest I had was was almost two meters tall last Christmas but it died during my house renovation.

white flower

This flower is not relevant to this post. I have blogged about it before. I am so happy to see it blooming I decided to take its pic to share with readers. The big joke is that it started becoming very healthy after my son jus threw away orange skins, fruit peels into its pot recently. I have also got into the habit of filling the pot with water. Suddenly it has become so healthy with many blooms. :) If like this I don’t need to buy fertilizer ….hahahaa

I don’t believe that I’ve ever seen Yam growing so I can’t tell if that’s real yam or if it’s an invasive weed that’s mistakenly been called Yam or not.

Do you have any government departments that have websites where you might find information about invasive plants. You could also try visiting Gardenweb.com where you might be able to ask people on the forum if they recognize this plant.

Glad to hear your flower is doing well. You can always put kitchen scraps like veggie peels in a bucket (with lid and a few airholes) outside or under your kitchen sink and then when the scraps have started to decompose mix them into your plants soil.

thanks for the suggestion abt gardenweb and i would try out the decomposition bit :) thanks!
