Hari Gawai and SIB Church
Character : Slightly tanned, 1.65 m and 75kg. Age : uncertain.
Bengbeng: Selamat Gawai.
Loren : I am going home on the 28th and coming back on the 4th. It is not the same for Gawai as when you last visited. The long house has already been converted by SIB ( Sidang Injil Borneo ) a church group. There will not be the usual festivities. Cara lama tak pakai lagi. We may end up like the Chinese living in terrace houses except we call it rumah panjai.
Some how it will not be the same. I am happy to be a Christian but sometimes I think being a Christian we throw away too much of our culture. Last year ( during Christmas ) to appease the visitors, we kept the tuak ( rice wine ) away but when the church elders went back, we beat the gongs as usual and had fellowship with the wine. It is not really wrong. Just not acceptable to some.
There are a few pintu ( houses ) who still have not accepted SIB. They find themselves more and more left out in our close knit community. They will soon join us I am sure. In the meantime, I always tell every body to always be too polite to them no matter what form of resistance they make to our activities.
Things are getting very expensive nowadays. This year I am considering moving to West Malaysia and looking for a job. The pay here ( Sibu ) is too low and it is pointless to stay in the kampung. If for example I work as security or something in KL or Penang, life will be much easier and secure ( hidup senang-senang ).

This reminds me that I want to attend a BM mass on Gawai (on 2nd June, rite?) ‘cos I want experience a mass celebrated in BM. I am reading the BM Al-Kitab now and wish to explore further. Hehehe.
i enjoyed an Iban mass but here we call it service? . We sang lovely Iban gospel songs too. It was easy as they use A,B,C jus like BM. We just need the lyrics. It waswonderful. Reading the BM / Iban bible will b very different although the message is the same. a cultural thingy
just curious. how bout kuching? would the pay there be ok?
