Rm2.70 per litre: Sibu petrol stations stuck with long queues of anxious motorists

packed roads

Some residents in Sibu reacted in shock and despair to the announcement that petrol prices would go up to Rm2.70 effective midnight tonight. This year there has been a sombre mood that could not be masked even by the Gawai festivities. People are bunking now and preparing for the worst which is yet to come. It is only to be expected that in the future the price of other essential every day items are going only in one direction : up, up and up.

Roads near petrol stations were packed with car queuing to buy petrol. One motorist said although they could save this one time, they still would have to pay more each and every time they fill up after midnight tonight.

Many Sibu residents especially those who live on the outskirts who have been taxed by high toll charges Rm6.00 for a saloon car return journey across the short Lanang bridge ( 900m over water ) will now have to live with the new nightmare: the higher petrol bill.

The new price of petrol is RM2.70 per liter beginning midnight tonight, it was announced a moment ago by Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad. Diesel will go up by RM1 per liter while the price for ULG 92 per liter went up by 74 sen. The 78 sen hike or 40 per cent increase for the ULG 97 petrol is still below the anticipated RM4 per liter price projected earlier and among the cheapest in Asia

    RM2.7 is very cheap price.
In Korea, it`s about RM6.37 per liter.
    I envy you. :)

  2. Foong says:

NoPD, no need to envy us for long cos by August, we would probably have to pay market rate. Another bad news coming up for credit card holders cos starting July 1st, no more 20-day interest free period for those who didn’t make full payment on their cards.

  3. wuching says:

here even worse; AUD1.60 per liter which is about RM4.95!

  4. Choonie says:

I personally think that we shouldn’t compare the price of petrol that way. Let say, we are earning RM2000 and Wuching is earning AUS$2000. He is only spending AUS$1.60 and we are paying RM2.70 for a liter of petrol. If our salary is twice more than them, I will probably just keep quiet and pay for it. This is so unfair. It is clearly the government sucks. Can’t wait for the Sarawak Election. Or probably some giant protest.

  5. Kean-Jin Lim says:

Fully agree with you, Choonie. If want to compare to other, then, compare everything not take particular one and “cook” the story.

    US gas = $4.00 a gallon. Malaysia gas = $3.03 gallon. France gas = $10 a gallon. Russia gas = $3.68 gallon. Germany gas – $8.33.

Commodities cost what they cost. (Gold, Oil, Wheat, Rice, etc.) Artificial markets don’t work, unless its a closed market. Electronics are cheaper in Malaysia now because the market is opened up.

Subsidies I think are ok, and that counties business, but the market price is the market price.

  8. Gymz says:

    hello guys,

i noticed some of you think that RM2.70 is way cheaper than other countries but unfortunately, we earn (monthly income) far less than your people. A clerk in Singapore earn more than college degree holders in Malaysia.

is gonna be hard to cope with the new price. gonna eat ‘fan su’ for lunch soon…

  12. Coral says:

Malaysia is an oil producing country. Prices ought to be much lower compared to other non-oil countries. Try comparing with other oil countries. What on earth is Shahrir’s point by saying we are among the lowest in Asia?

  13. napaboaniya says:

With the increase of petrol prices… sooner or later.
We can all start to jalan kaki :P

  14. i Share says:

Petrol prices have gone up here in India too :(

Don’t you feel those cycling days were far better?
    How I wish…

  15. jam says:

Among the cheapest in Asia? Cannot compare with Thailand and Singapore as we are oil producer.

  16. Adino says:

@Che-Cheh: Change govt can or not? :P

  17. Che-Cheh says:

Adino, I think it’s too late for that. Which one is faster? chg govt must wait few more years hahaha
