Mr Pajero , toothpicks and dinner bill

pajero

Character : Late 30s, father of three and active in non-governmental organizations. Very fair complexion, big eyes, well toned and good with his hands. Generally known to some of his closer friends as Mr Pajero in jest.

Mr Pajero : I don’t really know how it happened. I saw two of my friends having a drink. They invited me and I joined them. Then more and more people joined in. Before we all knew it there were about a dozen of us. There must have been at least 100 opened cans of beer, and food of all description as we joked and laughed the night away.

Two hours later, the conversation started to taper off. Nobody dared to leave. The bill was still unpaid. It would have cost including the food an estimated Rm900.00. I looked around. Every body fidgeted. The small container of toothpicks was getting more and more empty. Every body was busy using the tooth picks for picking their teeth. Nobody dared to catch my eye.

The gathering had just swelled beyond the original small group. The bill was simply too much for any one person to pay. Some furtively looked at their watches. The number of toothpicks in the container got less and less. I looked around some more. The amount of picking would ensure any tooth not solid fall out of the mouth the way some of my friends wre going.

I had to leave. I dumped Rm100.00 on the table and said that was my contribution and acted as if to leave. Immediately others dropped in Rm100.00, Rm50.00 or Rm30.00 onto the dining table. I counted . There was barely enough. There was a surplus of Rm14.00. I spent it on Magnum but nothing came out of it.
