Snail in my rice
I was having lunch today when I suddenly found a baby snail in my food. It was about the size of a one sen coin. My immediate reaction was to make a big deal of it but I just went to a nearby sink and washed my mouth. Mrs BB insisted I keep quiet about it lest we step on any toes.
A nearby customer saw the snail and shouted, “No ne,no ne , tauke niao, how can u be like this one?” I will never come here again. It was so embarrassing. I should have have removed the snail from the table when I left for the sink. The thought never crossed my mind.
Now I am the proverbial bad guy. Apparently I highlighted the incident by lifting the snail out of the plate and putting it on the table. Anyway, taukeh niao did not want to accept payment for our meal. All I want to comment is if you go to a unfamiliar eating stall, visit their kitchen first.
When I was at the sink, I noticed the worker took the vegetable ( kua chai ) from a basket placed it under the tap for about 5 seconds and immediately stir fried it . It will be a wonder if the snail is detected at all or other impurities.
Pic not included nor address of eating stall due to sensitivity of the subject matter

just imagine that it’s escargot la… :p
i am sorry i cannot
I was at a coffeeshop near Taman Perling when I saw the hawker washing the vegetables at the very same sink which customers use to spit and wash their hands.
best is to be aware always. after all it is our money
outside food is always liddis one,
i once found staple in my rice! and plasctic! and worms (yuks!)! and some other impurities…
is this why these make da food tastes nice?
i dont agree. it is our right when we pay good money, we expect at least clean food
That’s why, many times i made hard decision to eat inside home food. One eg is that the chopsticks given are grown with mold. Another is that they use the same cloth to wipe table and plate and bowl.
the table cloths used r sometimes horrible. worse they just wipe off the left overs n leave it on the floor. thank God that is getting less now
the worst i experienced was a coffee shop in Burmah Road. the waiter’s fingers were black with grime and his fingers were in the drinks. he used his bare hands to scoop up ice. In another famous ice kacang stall in Lorong Selamat, the whole big cube of ice dropped down onto the floor which is used by customers going in and out of the toilet. he just lifted up the ice and made ice shavings and used it for our iced lemon tea without washing n without a second thought.
I always order hot drinks or drinks in cans in unfamiliar joints
I won’t make a big deal out of it…like you. But I won’t visit them again.
sometimes it is best best to b polite. i dont have to go back there but i wont have to make a big production of it. jus leave quietly
It’s not quite their workers fault. I’m in this line too and I know how bad it can be. Be it your utensil or plate.
I give you an example of being a dishwasher. The problem with this job is that the person is overwhelmed with the number of plates to washed. And to make sure every plate is clean is not possible cos everyone wants to go home early and if the person helping out is not hardworking enough, the person is real screwed. And of cos there’re many ways to get around with it.
The more customer a restaurant has to serve, the lower the cleanliness of the plates and utensil. The cleanest place you can have is at home.
How to solve it? Hire more people. Which means more cost to your plate of rice or noodle.
now that u put it this way, it becomes more understandable n i am able to see it from their point of view. i oways try to make no enemies or ruffle any feathers. lukily i didnt create any scene that i might regret
no neh no neh! you should have flipped the table liao!
wat if there r cockroaches under the table?
Some snails are edible I have heard, though never tasted one. May be that was an ingredient of the recipe… snail stir fried rice.
i prefer without snails thank you )
i think i would just tell the tauke personally and get another plate for free. I mean we pay to have a clean food(at least there’s no SIGHT of snails of other impurities). Thats our right isnt it?
aiya u know i dont like to fuss or attract attention

its a good gesture on his part to not accept money. though yes, it musnt be repeated as well.
and quite thoughtful of you not to show his stall here. he must be quite thankful
